On Wednesday, Robert Murray of FanSided took to his “Baseball Insiders” podcast with this nugget on free agent slugger Kyle Schwarber:

“The Red Sox - this is one that I mentioned at the GM meetings that people were talking about around the league as a team, maybe, to watch here [for Kyle Schwarber], and I still feel that way. Like, Schwarber is a great fit in Boston. Having him play year round in Fenway would be incredible. He's got deep ties to the organization - I believe Cora was his manager there when he was with Boston after the trade with the Nationals. So he's got familiarity there as well. I still think that's a really good fit there for Boston and for Schwarber. So I think that's one to watch. That's definitely one that I would like, as a baseball fan. I would like to see Schwarber playing in Boston, I feel like that'd be a really cool thing.”

This from Murray is the just the latest insider to connect “Kyle from Waltham” back to the team he played 52 games for across the regular season and postseason during a 2021 season that ended with a loss in Game 6 of the ALCS.

On Monday, ESPN’s Jeff Passan took to his account on Threads to post a thread (no pun intended) of things he’s keeping an eye on as the calendar turns to December.

Here’s how Passan began the thread:“The calendar turns from November to December in a few hours, and baseball’s hot stove is primed to heat up. As the Winter Meetings start in Orlando a week from today, here are 10 things I’m keeping an eye on.”

Hidden within that thread of 10 items were multiple notes about the hot stove season for the Red Sox. Let’s focus on item No. 1:“Kyle Schwarber: The bellwether of the class. Schwarber’s market is healthy. He’s going to get years, and he’s going to get AAV, and at this point, he might be the likeliest of the big free agents to sign first. Unclear if something gets done before the meetings, but I’d be surprised if they end and he doesn’t have a team. The Phillies remain the favorite, with Boston, Cincinnati, the Mets and others in the mix.”

Another day, another report putting the Red Sox in the Schwarber mix. Albeit as a secondary option, but in the mix nonetheless.

Schwarber is projected to receive a long-term, multi-year contract in the range of $132 million to $160 million, with projections varying within that range. A significant number of projections align with what Passan posted on Monday, saying he will return to the Phillies, potentially on a five-year, $132 million deal, or even a 4-year, $128 million deal.

If Boston is, indeed, a team to continue watching as it relates to Schwarber, it will be curious to see how they choose to operate the rest of the hot stove season.

Would the addition of a big money deal for Schwarber put Boston at their self-imposed spending limit, per reports from MassLive’s Sean McAdam on Sunday?

If you’re a Red Sox fan hoping for a deeper playoff run in 2026, you better hope not.
