The Lady Villains were expecting a pitched battle in their home season opener against Wilson Prep, but a huge second quarter run and good defense in the third quarter propelled Bishop McGuinness to a resounding 67-32 victory.

“I think everyone was surprised by the score,” Head Coach Brian Robinson said. “Wilson Prep was 25-2 last year, went to the 1-A state semifinals, and they had almost everybody back. If you looked at the warm-ups and the pre-game they had three or four girls way taller than we were. Their center is 6-3 and she is strong. To our credit, we did a good job guarding her. In the first quarter we did not do a good job boxing out, and they were getting rebounds. Once we started getting the loose balls we turned them into transition points, and it snowballed from there. The important part was the rebounding. Morgan Aho did not score a point, but she had nine rebounds and five steals. She contributed to about 20 points just with her effort and fighting for the ball.”

Bishop McGuinvness took a 40-16 lead with the second-quarter run and iced the game by limiting Wilson Prep to six points in the third quarter.

The Lady Villains’ Claire Sullivan poured in 21 points and made three 3-pointers in the game. Jenna Moore scored 16 points, and Laney Heafner finished with 11 points.

Bishop McGuinness (3-1) will play away against Albemarle tonight, Dec. 4, at 6 p.m.

“Albemarle was in the Elite Eight last season in 1-A. They had us by 12 points at halftime last season and we came back to beat them. We have had to go against them at some point each season the last four years,” Robinson said.
