LOCAL ROUNDUP: HPCA basketball sweeps Piedmont Classical

HIGH POINT – High Point Christian defeated Piedmont Classical 59-47 in nonconference boys basketball Tuesday at HPCA.

James Singletary had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Cougars (3-1). Robert Nyamongo added 12 points and eight rebounds, while Jysen Seymore also had 12 points, five assists and four steals. Sonne Williams chipped in 11 points, six assists and four steals.

In the girls game, HPCA won 59-12 to open its season 1-0. Blakely Bowman had 20 points, 15 rebounds, seven assists and seven steals, while Landyn Smith had 19 points, six rebounds and six steals. Lauren Robinson added eight points and eight rebounds, followed by Kerri Langfitt had four points and six rebounds.

HPCA has moved its conference opener against Greensboro Day originally scheduled for Friday to Thursday due to the threat of bad weather.

SOUTHWEST GUILFORD, SOUTHEAST GUILFORD

PLEASANT GARDEN – Southwest Guilford beat Southeast Guilford 69-45 in nonconference boys basketball Tuesday at Southeast. The Cowboys improved to 2-1.

In the girls game, Southwest Guilford won 44-41 to improve to 3-0.

WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN GIRLS, PROVIDENCE DAY

CHARLOTTE – Wesleyan Christian lost 58-39 against Providence Day in nonconference girls basketball Tuesday at Providence Day. The Trojans dipped to 4-2.

WESTCHESTER COUNTRY DAY BOYS, NEW GARDEN FRIENDS

GREENSBORO – Westchester Country Day edged New Garden Friends 53-52 in nonconference boys basketball Tuesday at New Garden Friends. The Wildcats improved to 2-1.

EAST DAVIDSON, PARKLAND

WINSTON-SALEM – East Davidson fell 68-43 against Parkland in nonconference boys basketball Tuesday at Parkland. The Golden Eagles dipped to 0-2. In the girls game, East lost 68-28 to move to 0-2.

LEDFORD, NORTH DAVIDSON

WALLBURG – Ledford beat rival North Davidson 77-56 in nonconference boys basketball Tuesday at Ledford. The Panthers improved to 3-0.

In the girls game, Ledford won 61-3-38 to improve to 2-1.

OAK GROVE, NORTHERN GUILFORD

GREENSBORO – Oak Grove topped Northern Guilford 62-40 in nonconference boys basketball Tuesday at Northern.

Cam Cannady scored 17 points to lead the Grizzlies (1-0). Toot Clay added 14 points, while Jyden Barnes had 11 points.

In the girls game, Oak Grove won 77-65 to improve to 4-0. Kalin Favreau had 23 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Cora Hadley had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Victoria Lockamy had 13 points, 13 assists and three steals.

RAGSDALE, SOUTHERN GUILFORD

SUMNER – Ragsdale beat Southern Guilford 66-61 in nonconference boys basketball Tuesday at Southern.

The Tigers improved to 4-2 while the Storm dipped to 0-3.

In the girls game, Ragsdale won 64-19. Ja'mya Boddie had 24 points and seven assists to lead the Tigers (3-2), followed by Marlei Williams with 13 points and Aaliya Boddie had eight points. Southern moved to 0-2.

THOMASVILLE, GLENN

THOMASVILLE – Thomasville won 56-46 against Glenn in nonconference boys basketball Tuesday at Thomasville.

Jay Jackson had 17 points for the Bulldogs (2-3). Zy'iveon Holmes added 16 points and nine rebounds, while Ziyhan Taylor had seven points and five assists. Christopher Jackson had six assists.

In the girls game, Thomasville lost 60-10 to move to 0-6.

WHEATMORE, SOUTHWESTERN RANDOLPH

FARMER – Wheatmore beat Southwestern Randolph 44-39 in nonconference boys basketball Tuesday at Southwestern Randolph.

Jordan Starkey scored 18 points to lead the Warriors (2-2). Collin Dodd added nine points and three steals, while Avery Ivey had seven points and three assists. Truman Auman, who had three assists, and Jordan Starkey had each five rebounds.

In the girls game, Wheatmore fell 39-36 to move to 3-1.

PHOENIX ACADEMY INVITATIONAL

WINSTON-SALEM – Oak Grove's boys and girls each posted a top-five finish in the team scores Tuesday in the Phoenix Academy Invitational indoor track meet at JDL Fast Track.

Pine Forest won the boys scores with 83 points, while Northeast Guilford won the girls scores with 74 points. Oak Grove was second in the boys scores with 67 points and tied for fourth in the girls scores with 42 points.

In the boys scores, Bishop McGuinness tied for seventh (36), TW Andrews was ninth (20) and Phoenix Academy was 12th (10). In the girls scores, Bishop and Andrews tied for eighth (34) and Phoenix was 11th (19).
