Nick E. Tarabay is making the leap from Ancient Rome to Ancient Greece for The Odyssey, and he is in awe of Christopher Nolan's practical approach. The star, who recently returned to his iconic role of Ashur for Starz's Spartacus: House of Ashur spinoff series, is one of the numerous names on Nolan's massive roster of stars, which is being led by Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as his son Telemachus and Anne Hathaway as his wife, Penelope.
Adapted from Homer's epic of the same name, The Odyssey will center on Damon's Greek king of Ithaca as he attempts to journey home after the end of the Trojan War, only to subsequently find himself facing off with everything from nymphs to a witch-goddess, a cyclops and the rage of Greek gods. Kicking off filming in early 2025, the film is currently on track for a July 17, 2026 release, with Universal also having already sold out a number of showings for special IMAX 70 mm screenings a year in advance.
Now, in a recent interview with ScreenRant's Tatiana Hullender to discuss his return for Spartacus: House of Ashur, Nick E. Tarabay opened up about his experience working on The Odyssey. The star began by teasing the "massive" scale that Nolan brought to his adaptation of the Homer epic, hailing the Oscar winner as "one of my favorite directors" and praising the fact that "he does everything for real":
Nick E. Tarabay: We're doing everything for real. But it's different than TV. Especially from House of Ashur, where I was working every day. [On Odyssey], you go and do one scene, and then, [whistling sound] for a week. "Are we back? Okay." But I was in Greece and Italy filming, and working with those guys was really fun.
The fact that Nolan is taking such a practical approach to The Odyssey's production shouldn't come as too much of a surprise for fans of the director, given he has always been dedicated to realism in his prior projects. Whether something on the more fantastical side like Inception, or something melding groundedness with major action set pieces in The Dark Knight Trilogy and Interstellar, among others, he has always strived to make things as big and real as possible.
The other major reason why Tarabay's quote falls in line with the expected scale of Nolan's The Odyssey is the fact it's the biggest budget that the Oscar winner has yet. Apart from The Dark Knight Rises, whose budget was broken down by gross versus net profits, with the former as $250–300 million and the latter $230 million, Nolan's Greek epic is working with a $250 million production budget. It's likely a good chunk of these funds are going to the movie's star-studded cast, but set photos have teased some of the major set pieces to come.

Christopher Nolan's upcoming adaptation of the Odyssey needs to take some pretty big lessons from the filmmaker's other cinematic successes.
Posts By Brandon Zachary Jun 22, 2025Another interesting takeaway from Tarabay's comments on The Odyssey is that his actual filming schedule on the movie likely points to a more supporting role for the star. With his note of being out on boats with other actors, this could indicate his being part of Odysseus' soldiers on their way home from the Trojan War, which could spell doom for his character given the rocky terrain he and his cohorts encounter. However, given the sheer scale of the movie, and Nolan's penchant for nonlinear storytelling and massive casts, Tarabay could appear elsewhere.
