The Philadelphia Phillies are focused on Kyle Schwarber and JT Realmuto this free agent cycle, and it's no surprise. Both are imperative to the Phillies' success, but they aren't the only potential free agents the Phillies could re-sign.

Harrison Bader or Max Kepler could also return, but the more important free agent for the Phillies is fan favorite lefty Ranger Suarez.

According to former MLB GM Jim Bowden of The Athletic, the latest Phillies and Suarez free agent update is big news for the All-Star starter's chance to return to the Phillies this offseason.

Phillies, Ranger Suarez get key free agent update

"The Phillies are trying to re-sign Suarez, 30," Bowden writes, "but also believe they have enough starting pitching in-house if they can't get a deal done with him."

Suarez returning to the Phillies would be an interesting deal, since they don't necessarily need to spend big on a free agent starter this winter.

Zach Wheeler should return a little into the season, Aaron Nola, Cristopher Sanchez, Jesus Luzardo, Taijaun Walker, and even Andrew Painter would be a good enough rotation.

Signing Suarez to a big deal is still on the table, as Bowden reports the Phillies are still interested.

But, with their sights set on Schwarber and Realmuto, Suarez doesn't seem like a strong candidate to return to Philadelphia.

The fact that the Phillies could be okay letting him walk is a damning indication that the Phillies aren't likely to re-sign Suarez, despite there still being interest.

Suarez had a 3.20 ERA in 2025 and was one of the Phillies' best pitchers this past season. In his 11 playoff appearances, including eight starts, Suarez has an incredible 1.48 ERA.

Losing a clutch pitcher like Suarez would sting, but it might be the outcome for the Phillies this offseason. Despite interest from the Phillies in a reunion, Suarez is more likely to depart in free agency this winter.
