Summary

  • In Landman Season 2, Andy Garcia returns as Gallino/Danny Morrell, deepening a promised relationship with Tommy.
  • Tommy now runs M‑Tex, as Gallino maneuvers his way into Norris' business through Cooper in a play to sway power and profit.
  • In this interview with Collider's Steve Weintraub, Garcia praises Taylor Sheridan’s impactful writing, working with Billy Bob Thornton, and teases his own noir film and an Ocean’s Eleven sequel.

In Landman Season 2, Episode 3, "Almost a Home," Andy Garcia reprises his role (written, he tells us, for him by Taylor Sheridan) as the charming crime lord Gallino. This season, he's proving to be a man of his word, as he shoulders his way into M-Tex as Danny Morrell, by way of Cooper's independent oil company. Talking with Collider's Steve Weintraub, he slyly teases that Season 2 will explore this promise Gallino made Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton) back in Season 1. "We're going to be real good friends."

As Gallino/Morrell continues to pull his strings, Tommy has stepped into the role of M-Tex President after Monty Miller's (Jon Hamm) death, now wheeling and dealing in lavish boardrooms and lunches. Alongside Cami Miller (Demi Moore), Tommy is also tasked with keeping M-Tex afloat, which may prove lucrative for Gallino after all.

In this interview, Garcia discusses the impact of Sheridan's writing and why he is uniquely fit to craft his own universe, from hit shows like Yellowstone to Special Ops: Lioness. He shares what Thornton said to him after their first scene together, and what it's like acting opposite one another, as well as what to expect from Season 2 for Gallino and Norris. Garcia also shares what he's got in the works outside Landman with the Ocean's Eleven franchise and his own passion project, written and directed by Garcia, with him playing a "1940s sort of Raymond Chandler gumshoe detective."

Warner Bros. Is Eyeing an 'Ocean's Fourteen' Script

COLLIDER: I'm a big fan of the Ocean's movies. I know they're working on another one. Has anyone called you and been like, “Get ready?”

ANDY GARCIA: I have access to the people who are actors and producers on the picture, and I'm aware that there is a script that Warner Bros. likes, to do I guess it would be 14.

That's what I heard.

GARCIA: It seems like everybody's into it. I have no idea when that will happen. It was supposed to happen already, but it didn't because of people's schedules, maybe. But I hear they want to do it, and it's just a matter of time, I guess. That's all I know.

You've worked on so many projects, and I'm just curious, which previous project changed you the most as an actor or just as a person?

GARCIA: Well, most recently, I just wrapped a movie I wrote and directed, and also acted in, called Diamond. I wrapped it two weeks ago. After 15 years of trying to get the movie made, it has had a great effect on me in a positive way, and emotionally. It was very stimulating, but very draining at the same time, and taxing, but in a good way. So, I'm very proud of it.

Can you tell people what it's about?

GARCIA: It's a noir piece. Detective, private eye, contemporary noir piece. I play the protagonist; his name is Joe Diamond. Basically, he is a 1940s sort of Raymond Chandler gumshoe detective. In his world that he creates around himself, he’s in period, but he operates as this private eye in contemporary Los Angeles.

Taylor Sheridan Wrote Gallino for Andy Garcia

"He has a very unique, sublime voice."

Jumping into Landman, there’s something about Taylor Sheridan's writing that just resonates with so many people around the world. Can you talk a little bit about his writing and what you respond to, and what do you think it is about his writing that the world responds to?

GARCIA: I think it's the overall quality of it. How you qualify if something is good writing or good anything is basically when you see, and you go, “That’s good writing.” His characters are so well drawn. They're unapologetic. They're opinionated. They're free. The way he structures his stories, the drama, the stakes in his stories, he's a great storyteller. Great storyteller. And I think it stems from his love of film, his knowledge of film, his knowledge of stories. The fact that he was an actor, is still an actor, and he has those sensibilities: “How would I play this part? What would I do?” This all informs his writing and his directing. He has a very unique, sublime voice, really, for me. For all of us. Like you say, it's obvious there are so many people who are attracted to the work he does.

Billy [Bob Thornton] said to me earlier that each character sounds like a different writer is writing it, and a lot of times it sounds like one writer is writing a lot of parts, and that's actually very accurate. These are all different people.

GARCIA: Yeah. That's very well put by Mr. Thornton, as always. His voice he created for Billy Bob is very unique to Billy, you could say. Like you said, he wrote it to him like it's a bespoke, tailored suit. But I think he does that with all the actors that he chooses to put in the show. He has people in mind, or he writes a character, and he says, “I want that actress or that actor.” I know he wrote the part for me. It wasn’t written when we met. He said, “I have an idea about this part. I want to write it for you.” And then you go, “Of course.” That's a blessing that you have someone like that who wants to write for you. So, for me, it was very simple. I said, “I'm all in. Tell me when to start.”

Gallino Makes Good on His Threat to Tommy in Season 2

Garcia discusses sharing scenes with Billy Bob Thornton, "like two old-timers playing gin."

I hate doing a generic question, but what do you want to tease people about Season 2 and the dynamic between your character and the other characters?

GARCIA: Well, I can't say much, obviously, because it spoils any surprises, and it's tricky because even though the first season was watched by a lot of people around the world, there are still some people who haven't watched it who might get to it. But there is a moment in the scene between me and Billy, in the first season, where Billy says, “We ain't ever going to be friends,” and I say, “Oh, no. We're going to be real good friends.” So, that's what we explore. How does that play out in Season 2?

I’ve seen the first two episodes, so I think I have an understanding of where it's all going to go, and I'm looking forward to seeing you and Billy go head-to-head.

GARCIA: Me too.

I know you're a fan of Billy, and obviously, you're a really talented actor. What is it actually like when you're getting ready to do a scene with Billy? How are you getting ready for that? How much fun are you having working with another all-star?

GARCIA: It’s great. It's very easy. There's mutual respect and generosity in the process of work. Billy always says it was like two-old timers playing gin. There's a comfort in that, I guess. That's what he told me when we first did our first scene, and it was just such a pleasure. I love working with him. We're able to play around with the scene, and wherever he wants to take it, I'm all in. And if I do something, he's right there, you know? We're not worried about surprising each other or taking it in a certain direction. It's always embraced. So, it's a utopian place to be as an actor when you're with someone like Billy Bob.

The rest of the cast. I don't have a lot of interaction with them, but obviously, I would feel the same way. And now we have Sam Elliott as part of the cast. So, I mean, talk about sublime. It's a beautiful cast with great writing and directing. We had Stephen Kay, who directed all our episodes and directed my last episode in the first season, who’s extraordinary, and also started as an actor. So, those kinds of sensibilities are appreciated when you have that kind of background.

Landman Season 2 is streaming on Paramount+, with new episodes premiering every Sunday.
