Yet despite 61 minutes of 11v10, Manchester United could not find a goal — let alone two — and slumped to defeat in front of the home faithful.

United have some excuses in that forwards Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko were unavailable, but they played 77 minutes in total with 11 men to Everton's 10 and could not score once.
