Plymouth Argyle's Vertu Trophy campaign can build a rhythm for improved league results, according to boss Tom Cleverley.

Lorent Tolaj's excellent backheeled stoppage-time winner saw the Pilgrims win 1-0 at Leyton Orient to progress to the last 16 of the competition.

It was just a second win in 10 games in all competitions for an Argyle side second-from-bottom of League One.

"I'm delighted that we've gone to the next round and yes, I think the cup competitions can be a source of real positivity and build confidence and rhythm," Cleverley told BBC Radio Devon.

"So this is important - it's taken on a bigger importance because our league form's not been where we want it.

"Now the big thing for us is we take that into the Bradford game and show some rhythm in our performances."

Tolaj's effort was again crucial - the Swiss striker has scored every Argyle goal since the start of October.

But the 24-year-old will be suspended for the next three games after being sent off for violent conduct in the 3-0 home defeat by Northampton Town on Saturday.

Tolaj will face no further punishment for his reaction to his red card after he kicked a ball towards the away fans at Home Park as he made his way to the dressing room.

Cleverley said he had spoken to the forward about his conduct and made it clear it must not happen again.

"He was disappointed in himself because we highlighted at half-time exactly what they were trying to do and he let it happen," added the Argyle boss.

"He felt like he knew he'd let everyone down. He apologised to the guys and myself.

"It's done now and he's come back with a perfect response."

Tolaj's absence means inexperienced Owen Oseni is likely to lead the line with fellow forward Bim Pepple still a week or so away from fitness.

Oseni, 22, has scored five times this season and played 77 minutes of the win at Orient.

"I thought he was good, he occupied the back line, held the ball up well, looked fit considering he's not started as many games as he'd like to," Cleverley said.

"I was pleased with his performance, so we were really happy with him because it's big shoes to fill, but he's shown he's capable."
