Laz Alonso teases that Avatar: Fire and Ash includes "a little treat" for fans of Tsu'tey. Alonso played the Na'vi character in the original Avatar film, where he was a skilled warrior who was at odds with Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) for much of the story. Jake and Tsu'tey ultimately fought together to defend Pandora from the RDA, but Tsu'tey died during the battle.
In a post celebrating Avatar: Fire and Ash's world premiere, Alonso posted several images from the red carpet, and ended his caption by saying, "if you’re a #Tsu’Tey fan….. you may get a little treat" followed by a winking emoji.
He also described the premiere as "a full circle moment" and describes Fire and Ash as a "Beautiful, suspenseful, heartfelt film" that he encourages everyone to see when the sequel comes to theaters on December 19. Check out Alonso's post and images from the event below:
Based on Alonso's caption, it is highly unlikely that he is a surprise member of Avatar: Fire and Ash's cast and that the sequel revives the deceased Tsu'tey. His phrasing of "a little treat" indicates that there will instead be a fitting reference or Easter egg that honors the legacy of the character.
Even though Tsu'tey has not appeared in the franchise since 2009, he remains a vital character who was crucial to Jake's understanding of Pandora and the Na'vi clans, especially the Omatikaya clan. A great deal has changed for Jake and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) since Tsu'tey tried to keep them apart, but he remains an important part of the journey that brought them together.
A nod to Tsu'tey is also fitting with Fire and Ash being called "a culmination of a saga" by James Cameron. Although there are more sequels planned, Cameron explains that Fire and Ash is the end of the saga that began with the first movie, while Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are more of their own saga. This makes it all the more important for the franchise to acknowledge Tsu'tey as the story that he helped begin comes to a close.
Since starring in Avatar, Alonso has appeared in a wide range of movies and television shows, although his most prominent role has been as Mother's Milk in Prime Video's hit series The Boys. Despite his career trajectory and having played Tsu'tey almost two decades ago, Alonso remains a fan of the character, the franchise, and is among those already praising Avatar: Fire and Ash.
