George Clooney has one of the more storied careers in recent film history, but Fantastic Mr. Fox remains a standout to him for a unique reason. Co-written by Wes Anderson with Noah Baumbach, and directed by the former, the 2009 film was an adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic 1970 novel, in which a group of animals, led by Clooney's titular character, living near three ruthless farmers begin conducting heists on their properties to feed their families and community.

In addition to marking the two-time Oscar winner's first partnership with Anderson, it's also one of his few projects as a voice actor. Prior to the 2009 film, Clooney made cameos in South Park and its movie expansion, while the years since Fantastic Mr. Fox have only seen him provide his voice to John Krasinski's IF as the astronaut imaginary friend dubbed Spaceman, and the HBO Max docuseries The Last Movie Stars as Paul Newman.

During an interview with ScreenRant's Ash Crossan to discuss his Oscar buzzy drama Jay Kelly, Clooney was asked about what Fantastic Mr. Fox means to him as one of his few voice acting jobs. The Oscar winner began by recalling the film was "so exciting to do because it was done in such an unorthodox way," pointing out that, unlike most productions, "we weren't in a studio doing voiceovers."

Instead, he and the rest of the available Fantastic Mr. Fox cast "were on a farm pretending" to be their characters, remembering a scene in which, as Mr. Fox walks into a cave and lets out a "Hello..." that echoes, he himself was the one imitating the echo. Describing it as a "granular way" to produce a film, Clooney praised his time on the 2009 hit as being "a beautiful experience."

Clooney's time with Fantastic Mr. Fox does remain a unique one, even beyond that of it being a rare voice-acting performance for him, as he's not reunited with Anderson since. The Oscar winner has a penchant for collaborating with actors multiple times across multiple projects. Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe and Owen Wilson are just a few of Anderson's recurring players, with the latter even co-writing his 1996 directorial debut, Bottle Rocket.

Given Clooney has always remained gracious about his experience on Fantastic Mr. Fox, including his comments above, it seems likely the two haven't collaborated again simply due to a matter of scheduling. The Oscar-winning star has remained consistently busy both in front of and behind the camera in the 16 years since the film, working on everything from Netflix's sci-fi drama The Midnight Sky to the Ben Affleck-led adaptation of The Tender Bar and adaptation of The Boys in the Boat.

Similarly, Anderson has made seven feature films and the four Roald Dahl-based short stories on Netflix. Considering some of Anderson's recent films have seen him make long-awaited reunions with some stars, ranging from Tony Revolori to Jeff Goldblum, and Clooney is increasing his acting docket with Ocean's 14 and other projects, one can hope that the two find a way to make a Fantastic Mr. Fox reunion happen in some way in the future.
