Where Vanderbilt football stands in CFP rankings update after Tennessee win

Vanderbilt football was ranked No. 14 in the penultimate College Football Playoff rankings on Dec. 2.

The Commodores defeated Tennessee 45-24 to finish their regular season at 10-2. However, it wasn't enough to land in the top 10 of the rankings, which would be necessary to receive a bid. Vanderbilt was ranked below BYU, Miami Texas.

The playoff consists of the five highest-ranked conference champions plus seven at-large bids. However, two of the conference championship games do not consist of any teams ranked in the top 15, meaning at-large teams must be ranked in the top 10 of the committee's final rankings, which will be released Dec. 7.

While Alabama and BYU have conference championship games on deck, Miami and Texas do not, meaning Vanderbilt functionally has no chance of being selected.

Many associated with Vanderbilt, including coach Clark Lea, athletic director Candice Lee, university chancellor Daniel Diermeier and men's basketball coach Mark Byington, called on the committee to put the Commodores in the playoff in recent days.
