After enjoying an offseason of consistency ahead of the 2025 season with both coordinators staying put, Dan Lanning is now going to have to find a new offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator following this season.

Oregon Ducks defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi is reportedly going to be leaving Eugene after the 2025 season, traveling down to Berkeley to take over as the next head coach of the California Golden Bears.

The move has been in the works for a couple of weeks now, but was made official on Tuesday, first reported by The Athletic's Bruce Feldman. This comes less than a day after Oregon's offensive coordinator Will Stein accepted the head coaching job for the Kentucky Wildcats.

Stein plans to stay with Oregon through the College Football Playoff and coach the offense through the end of the season, so there should be an expectation that the same is the case for Lupoi.

Lupoi was one of the first hires for Lanning when he took over as the head coach in Eugene, and he has progressively improved as the defensive play-caller for the Ducks. Oregon has one of the best defenses in the nation this year, ranking No. 8 in scoring defense (15.0 ppg), and No. 2 in total defense (252.3 ypg).

Lupoi will be taking over a project in Berkeley, with California parting ways with long-time coach Justin Wilcox earlier this season. The Golden Bears finished the season with a 7-5 record, making them eligible for a bowl game this next month.

The primary objective early on for Lupoi will be trying to retain some of the top players on the roster, such as freshman quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, and then working the transfer portal in early January to build his roster for the 2026 season.

With Lupoi now off to take on his own program, the search for a new defensive coordinator begins in Eugene. There are many options for Lanning to consider, but the current belief is that co-DC and defensive backs coach Chris Hampton will be in line to receive a promotion and become the DC.
