It’s not easy being a cornerback in the NFL. You’re tasked with covering some of the best athletes in the world, sometimes one-on-one with no help from a safety or second defender.

Every corner gives up big plays and touchdowns from time to time, battling through some tough games. Emmanuel Forbes Jr. had one of those on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. He gave up five catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns in the game, his worst performance of the year. But the Los Angeles Rams have lost no trust or confidence in their promising young cornerback.

Sean McVay told J.B. Long on the “Coach McVay Show” Monday that the Rams still have a lot of belief and trust” in Forbes after he gave up two long touchdowns to the Panthers on fourth down, which proved to be pivotal in Los Angeles’ 31-28 loss.

“When you’re a corner, you better be well-equipped to be able to move forward and handle it,” McVay said. “And you’re put in some challenging situations, those are hard downs for him. But he’s played a lot of really good football and he’ll respond. If you don’t have a short memory as a DB, it’s going to be a short career and he’s built to be able to move forward the right way and we have a lot of belief and trust in him.”

When breaking down those two plays, McVay said Forbes could have had better leverage against Jalen Coker on the fade down the right sideline, which resulted in a touchdown. On Tetairoa McMillan’s game-winner, “it was a pretty good throw and catch” on a “longer-developing” play, with Forbes being “in good phase.”

“Those are easy corrections,” McVay said.

The coach doesn’t sound the least bit worried about his No. 1 cornerback, who had been playing some excellent football before Sunday’s game. He broke up four passes and had an interception against the Buccaneers the week prior and did a great job against Jaxon Smith-Njigba in Week 11.

Forbes has been burned at times this season but he’ll bounce back and have a better game against the Cardinals on Sunday.
