Norway and Sweden have become the latest countries to warn against travel to Venezuela.
The Nordic countries have joined a growing list of nations advising their citizens against going to the South American country due to crime, instability, and shortages.
They include the U.S., Canada, Australia, Germany, and Italy which have issued the strongest “Do Not Travel” warnings.
Newsweek has contacted Venezuela’s foreign ministry for comment.
...Why It Matters
The growing list of countries advising against travel signal a unified stance on Venezuela’s instability under its president Nicolas Maduro, who is not recognized as the legitimate leader of the country by the U.S. and the European Union, following disputed 2024 elections he claimed to have won.
It also comes amid anticipation over the Trump administration's next move towards Venezuela following a military buildup in the Caribbean and strikes on boats the U.S. said were carrying drugs, which Maduro has denied, saying Washington actions are aimed at ousting him.
What To Know
Sweden's foreign ministry said that due to the security situation, it advised against all travel to Venezuela and that advice was valid until further notice. "The possibility of providing consular support in the event of a consular crisis is very limited," it said, according to a translation.
On the same day, its neighbor Norway, also warned against all travel to the South American country because the security situation there was "unpredictable."
The warning from Oslo said that transport and communication lines in and out of the country have been affected, and several airlines have cancelled their flights limiting the ability to leave Venezuela at short notice. There was also limited opportunities to provide consular assistance to Norwegian citizens in Venezuela. "Therefore, all travel to the country is now discouraged."
The message noted that this was a step up from its previous warning against travel that was not strictly necessary.
On May 27 this year, the U.S. government warned U.S. citizens against all travel to Venezuela for any reason, issuing its highest level 4 travel advisory level.
It said this was due to severe risks to Americans including wrongful detention, torture in detention, terrorism, kidnapping, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, crime, civil unrest, and poor health infrastructure. "More U.S. nationals are currently wrongfully detained in Venezuela than in any other country," the statement in May said which remains its latest advisory.
Other countries which have issued warnings against travel to Venezuela:
- United States
- Germany
- The United Kingdom
- Canada
