A girl’s response to her mom’s request for help around the house is going viral on the internet.

Rachel, who posts under the username @ms_wimsey, shared that she had asked her daughter whether she had time to help with chores in a post on Threads.

Newsweek reached out to @ms_wimsey via email.

Instead of agreeing or even negotiating, her 8-year-old daughter replied, “Let me check my schedule,” and sprinted off.

Moments later, she returned holding a handwritten document titled: “Secule.”

The schedule was packed. From “Nope 8:00” to “Nope 3:00,” “Nope 4:50,” “Nope 5:19,” and continuing with a parade of emphatic “nope” time slots all the way down to 6 p.m., the page left absolutely no room for domestic duties.

Research has shown that giving children regular responsibilities can benefit them far beyond simply keeping the house running.

A study from the University of Minnesota followed participants for over 20 years and found that children who started doing chores at a young age were more likely to have stronger relationships, better academic performance and higher levels of independence later in life.

Another study from 2022 reported that chores significantly predicted stronger executive functioning in children, including better working memory and self-control.

Rachel’s post has clocked up over 25,000 likes, comments and shares on Threads.

In the comments, users were inspired by Rachel’s daughter’s response.

“In case you were wondering, I don’t think she’s available at 5,” one user quipped.

“Can I copy this and send it to my boss when I don't feel like working?” wrote another.

“I’m gonna start putting ‘nope’ appointments in my Outlook,” another said.

A third user wrote, “She has 3 minutes between 5:16 and 5:19. Why can't she help you then?”

Another mom shared her then 7-year-old daughter’s Saturday to-do list from 2017. It read: Eat breakfast. Watch TV. Eat big breakfast. Blow bubbles.

“I can’t think of a better way to spend a Saturday,” she wrote.

...

Rachel followed up with an update that delighted commenters even more. Curious about the mysterious entries, she asked her daughter what exactly she had scheduled at 5 p.m. Pacific. The response? “It’s top secret.”

After Rachel showed her the reaction online, the 8-year-old asked: “Since the Internet loves me, can I have a lollipop?”
