The New York Yankees traded for a Milwaukee Brewers closer last offseason, and the move backfired. Devin Williams had the worst year of his career, and the Yankees had to trade for David Bednar.
While Bednar is under contract and the Yankees also have Camilo Doval, who can slot in as a closer, the team could look to even further strengthen the bullpen. Trevor Megill would be a great addition to the Yankees, coming off his first All-Star season. Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter proposed this trade that would send Megill to the Bronx:
- Yankees receive: Trevor Megill
- Brewers receive: RHP Carlos Lagrange (Yankees No. 2 prospect), 1B T.J. Rumfield (Yankees No. 25 prospect), RHP Harrison Cohen (Yankees No. 30 prospect)
...This package would be significantly more than the Yankees gave up for Williams, but Megill has two more years of club control and is coming off a career year. He posted a 2.49 ERA and 30 saves last season. He also notched a career-high 30 strikeouts. The Brewers already have Abner Uribe, who thrived as the closer when Megill was hurt, ready to take over.
The Brewers always operate with the future in mind, so trading their All-Star closer in exchange for prospects is n ot out of the question. In fact, Megill would be the third All-Star closer the Brewers have traded since 2022. Josh Hader and Williams both met the same fate.
A bullpen of Megill, Bednar and Doval would be great for the Yankees. However, whether Megill becomes the closer or becomes the setup man for Bednar would be something to monitor.
