ALLENDALE - The defending state champion Grand Valley State women's basketball team remained undefeated behind a strong start.
The Lakers scored 25 points in the first quarter, racing to an 81-56 win over Northwood on Sunday, Nov. 30, in the team's home opener.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement"It is always good to play at home," GVSU coach Mike Williams said. "We have been away for a while. Everyone had a lot of energy tonight. We had a little more pop in our step."

Avery Zeinstra hit back-to-back 3-pointers to spark a 16-2 run late in the first quarter to put the Lakers in control.
Nicole Kamin and Anayya Davis each hit 3s in the second quarter as the Lakers led 42-24.
Kamin scored a season-high 19 points, hitting 7-11 shots, adding six boards and three steals.
"The big thing for me is to not worry about scoring. If I do what I am supposed to, the points will come," Kamin said.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementZeinstra tallied 14 points, connecting on four of her five 3-point attempts and Ava Scanlon recorded 10 points.
"We just moved the ball really well," Zeinstra said.
Paige VanStee and Anayya Davis each had nine points. MacKenzie Bisballe totaled seven points, eight rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Lexi Plitzuweit had six assists and Avery Lay tallied four steals.
"We did a good job crashing down and our players were very active around the glass," Williams said.
GVSU begins GLIAC competition this week, hosting Lake Superior State on Thursday for senior night and Saginaw Valley State on Saturday when the Lakers will raise last year's NCAA championship banner.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement"We get to play home again this week and try to continue this momentum," Williams said. "The GLIAC is really good and any time you play a conference game, it is going to be a battle."
