While Black Bag underperformed at the box office, MobLand holds the distinction of being the show that beat Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone on the Paramount+ streaming service. It remains one of the biggest hits of the year, and it finally seems like Brosnan is having fun in his elder statesman years. The actor struggled to break out of his image as James Bond, with several of his post-007 movies flopping at the box office, regardless of genre. Among the earliest was 2004's After the Sunset, a big-budget heist film that's currently available on Netflix, but is set to leave the platform on December 1.
The film also features Woody Harrelson, Don Cheadle, Salma Hayek and future Bond cast member Naomie Harris in supporting roles. After the Sunset was directed by the disgraced Brett Ratner, who was coming off the first two Rush Hour blockbusters. After the Sunset opened to terrible reviews, and tanked commercially. It grossed a hair over $60 million worldwide against a reported budget of $60 million, and is now sitting at an 18% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The critics' consensus on RT reads, "A slick but bland thriller." That same year, Brosnan starred alongside Julianne Moore in Laws of Attraction, which flopped as well. He delivered an acclaimed performance in the following year's The Matador, but that movie didn't exactly break out at the box office either.
What Is Pierce Brosnan in Now?
It wouldn't be until 2008's Mamma Mia! that Brosnan experienced the success of a bona fide post-Bond blockbuster. He now has a couple of smaller projects lined up, but the big one on the horizon is the second season of MobLand. Also starring Tom Hardy, Helen Mirren, and Paddy Considine, the gangster drama was executive produced by Guy Ritchie. MobLand emerged as a ratings juggernaut, and it's still among the 10 most-watched shows on the global Paramount+ charts.
After the Sunset is available on Netflix until December 1. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
