One of the most memorable movie trailers of the last two decades is the teaser that Sony released for David Fincher's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Set to Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song," the teaser was essentially a collection of flashing images, with a bold slogan declaring the thriller being advertised as the "feel-bad movie of Christmas." Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Swedish author Steig Larsson, the movie was designed to spawn a franchise. But its underperformance at the box office nixed those plans entirely. It starred Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara, who earned an Academy Award nomination for her titular performance, and it is now heading to a new streaming platform just in time for Christmas.

Released in 2011, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo served as Fincher's immediate follow-up to his Best Picture-nominated psychological drama The Social Network, which many declared as his best film yet, and among the best of the 21st century. In addition to the critical acclaim that it earned, The Social Network was also a box office hit, grossing $225 million worldwide. In fact, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo ended up making slightly more, and tapped out at over $230 million globally. But it also cost nearly $100 million to produce, as opposed to The Social Network, which came with a reported price tag of $40 million. Fincher has never been one to cut corners, and it was said that he milked every last penny out of the production by shooting on location in Sweden, and being as meticulous as ever. By comparison, the Swedes were able to adapt all three novels in Larsson's series for less than what it cost Fincher to make one movie.

The Franchise Was Rebooted With an Even Bigger Flop

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo opened to critical acclaim, and is now sitting at a "certified fresh" 86% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "Brutal yet captivating, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is the result of David Fincher working at his lurid best with total role commitment from star Rooney Mara." The series was rebooted some years later with Fede Álvarez's The Girl in the Spider's Web, which starred Claire Foy in the titular role, and ended up grossing $35 million worldwide against a reported budget of around $45 million.
