Having bullpen pieces in Major League Baseball is always one of the most important needs for contending teams like the Philadelphia Phillies.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe Phillies went out and made a blockbuster deal for right-hander Jhoan Duran at the trade deadline a year ago, giving them arguably one of the best three closers in Major League Baseball.
Searching for a possible addition in the bullpen, Theo DeRosa of MLB.com stated that while the Phillies’ bullpen will be among the top three questions they have to answer, he doesn’t expect them to be in the mix for Edwin Diaz, Robert Suarez or Devin Williams. Those three relievers are the top ones available this winter.
“Having Jhoan Duran, last season’s principal Trade Deadline acquisition, for a full season should certainly help. The Phillies return several leverage arms -- including Orion Kerkering, Tanner Banks and Matt Strahm -- and picked up Alvarado’s club option for 2026. But the bullpen has faltered repeatedly during the regular season and at key moments in the postseason as well, and it never hurts to add more arms.
“It’s unlikely the Phillies will go after one of the top free-agent relievers in the class (such as Edwin Díaz, Robert Suarez or Devin Williams), but there are plenty of available pitchers who could help. If Philadelphia wants to help out its excellent starting rotation and build toward another postseason push, adding a reliever or two would be appropriate,” he wrote.

Hopefully, Philadelphia can at least add to its bullpen by doing that.
