Point guard play will have a lot to do with how far Duke goes, and Jon Scheyer has a pair of pretty good ones.

Duke will play defending national champs Florida in the ACC/SEC Challenge and while we’ll get to that in ad day or two, we thought it was worth it to look at this article from CBS Sports and pass it on.

The article is about how teams have adjusted their lineups, and one of the schools that Isaac Trotter focuses on is Duke and how Jon Scheyer has handled the point guards.

Caleb Foster has been starting of course, but Cayden Boozer has been playing a lot off the bench, averaging 20.5 minutes to Foster’s 23.4.

What interests Trotter though is that Duke has used Foster and Boozer together quite a bit. And it’s an interesting move.

Duke has done this before of course, notably in 2000-2001 when Jason Williams and Chris Duhon partnered together.

They did it again in 2009-2010 when Jon Scheyer and Nolan Smith played together, briefly in 2010-11 when Smith Kyrie Irving were the guards before Irving’s injury and one more time in 2014-15 when Tyus Jones and Quinn Cook were Duke’s backcourt mates.

Although 2010-11 breaks it, you may notice a pattern there.

Of course, all those teams were coached by Mike Krzyzewski and this one is coached by Scheyer, and that’s a pretty key difference.

However, while Foster and Boozer are not starting together, they are playing a lot. We’ll see how that works out as the season moves on.
