Harald Østberg Amundsen claimed victory in a 20 kilometres cross country mass start ski race as fellow Norwegian Johannes Høsflot Klæbo missed a 100th career World Cup victory on Sunday in Finland.

Amundsen made his move at the last short uphill from a five-man leader group in the freestyle race in Ruka which he had also won last year.

Amundsen clinched his 12th career victory 1.9 seconds ahead of team-mate Einar Hedegart, and Sweden's Edvin Anger completed the podium in third, 2.3 seconds off the pace.

Multiple world, Olympic and World Cup champion Klæbo had to settle for 15th as he failed to reach the 100 mark on his first attempt the day after topping the Ruka sprint on Saturday.

His next chance will come from Friday onwards at home races in Trondheim, where he made history by sweeping all six golds at the world championships this year.

The women's 20km was scheduled for later Sunday in Ruka along with men's Nordic combined and men's large hill ski jumping.

The women had large hill jumping on the Swedish hill of Falun where double world and World Cup champion Nika Prevc of Slovenia ended the perfect start into the season of Japan's Nozomi Maruyama with jumps of 125 and 132 metres for a 23rd career victory.

Marauyama, who had dominated the first three competitions, was second with 122.5m and 129m. Norway's Eirin Maria Kvandal was third.
