Manuel Neuer has defied age this season at Bayern Munich and put up some excellent performances just months before his 40th birthday. In line with these performances, the Bavarians are reportedly happy to keep their captain at the club for another year. That stance has not changed, but Bild reports, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, that Bayern are being more cautious about extending Neuer this year:
Internally, there are no complaints against Manuel Neuer at the club – but his performances are being closely monitored. Bayern are in no rush regarding a contract extension. Talks are not expected to begin until spring. It’s currently being anticipated that talks will take place in March, around Neuer’s 40th birthday. Neuer is among the highest earners, with an estimated salary of up to €20 million gross per year. Bayern are currently working to reduce wage costs. If he extends his contract, the captain would likely have to accept a pay cut.
Nevertheless, If Neuer wants to continue for another season, Bayern will be very accommodating to his wish Bayern’s clear plan is to extend Neuer’s contract, meanwhile Jonas Urbig will still get occasional game time and continue to develop behind. And then, at some point, he is expected to completely take over Neuer’s role as #1.
Bayern extended Neuer’s contract in early February the previous season and reports suggested the deal had been virtually done for months. If this report is to believed, Bayern are willing to not only wait longer this season but also ask the two time Champions League winner to take a pay cut. Perhaps the presence of Urbig gives Bayern more leverage in these negotiations.
