The New York Mets were the most disappointing team in all of baseball this season. They came into the year with World Series aspirations, but missed the postseason after a second-half collapse.

Now the Mets need to make some huge moves in free agency to avoid repeating the same mistakes. They need to make sure they retain their own top free agents, including Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz.

Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball recently predicted Alonso would sign a massive five-year deal worth $150 million with the Mets this offseason.

New York Mets infielder Pete Alonso...

"With Vladimir Guerrero Jr. now making just north of $35 million per season, Alonso settling in at $30 million a year seems like a fair price. Maybe to go to a five, or even a six-year commitment, the Mets can convince Alonso to help them with the luxury tax by deferring some of the deal," Finkelstein wrote. "Regardless, the Mets are going to have a very hard time trying to replace Alonso if they don’t re-sign him, so I expect the two sides to find some common ground."

The Mets need to make a big move after Dylan Cease reportedly came off the board to the Toronto Blue Jays. The Mets were rumored to be one of the top teams in the Cease sweepstakes.

Signing Alonso would be a huge first step to the offseason for New York. He's a fan favorite in Queens, and he's coming off a huge season. The Mets can't afford to lose his pop in the middle of the lineup, especially considering it's nearly impossible to replace on the market this offseason.
