Give me a lighthearted recap
Even though it's only been three years since the movie was released, it feels like it has been an eternity since we last saw Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Stephen Strange in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The fifth film in Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase 6 saw Strange reluctantly tap into the darkest of dark magic to defeat a grief-consumed Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), with the movie ending on a few cliffhangers, with Strange getting a third eye and with him meeting the Dark Dimension sorceress Clea (Charlize Theron). Since then, fans have been clamoring for more Doctor Strange, and the mystery behind his recent MCU hiatus only deepened when Cumberbatch's name was noticeably absent in the cast reveal for Avengers: Doomsday, along with other Marvel mainstays like Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo.
Thankfully, fans can rest easy knowing that we will indeed see Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange in the MCU again, and it could be sooner rather than later. I recently had the brilliant opportunity to speak with the MCU star in an interview for his new psychological horror drama, The Thing with Feathers. Of course, Marvel is famous for their unrelenting dedication to secrecy for all their projects, so Cumberbatch was understandably not able to give away too much. However, what he did reveal was that he "has more than a sense" for what his future in the MCU looks like and that we "definitely will" see the legendary sorcerer again. It's the first definitive update in a long time for what's in store for the more mystical side of the MCU, and it's bound to make fans excited for what may be next.
Will Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange Appear in 'Avengers: Secret Wars'?
Now the question for Benedict Cumberbatch's MCU future isn't if Doctor Strange will return, but rather, when. While Cumberbatch did reprise Strange for the Disney+ series What If...?, a big-screen return seems more likely. The upcoming projects confirmed to be on the way include Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday in 2026, as well as Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. While Cumberbatch reportedly won't appear in Doomsday, he has been heavily rumored to have a major role in Secret Wars, which makes perfect sense considering that it will be the monumental crossover event that will bring the Multiverse Saga to a close. Still, in a multiverse of infinite possibilities, it is anyone's guess when we'll see Strange and his levitating cape once again, but rest assured, we will see them again.
Benedict Cumberbatch Faces a Different Kind of Supernatural Threat in 'The Thing With Feathers'

Benedict Cumberbatch's latest film doesn't have him raising the dead or reversing time, but it does feature a powerful story of loss and grief set against a supernatural creature. The Thing with Feathers follows Cumberbatch's single father as he struggles with being the lone parent to two young boys after the tragic and untimely passing of his wife. As the grief starts to consume him, Cumberbatch's character finds himself being visited by an 8-foot-tall crow-like creature (voiced by David Thewlis), but it remains to be seen if this eerily maddening creature is a friend or a foe. While you wait for the next chapter of his Marvel journey, you can see Benedict Cumberbatch's latest performance in The Thing With Feathers in theaters now. Additionally, all of Benedict Cumberbatch's adventures as Doctor Strange, including Avengers: Infinity War and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, are available to stream on Disney+.Stay tuned to Collider for more updates. The Thing with Feathers is in select theaters starting November 28.
