Over the years, One Piece has introduced several overpowered villains, but few left a mark, like the former Beast Pirates Captain, Kaido. As a Mythical Zoan user, Kaido not only received boosts in his physical abilities but could also transform into a massive dragon at will. As such, he served as the series' primary antagonist for a significant period, especially during the Wano Country Saga.

However, did you know that Kaido wasn't the only villain in Wano with a broken Devil Fruit? Similar to Kaido, Kurozumi Orochi also derived his powers from a Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit called Hebi Hebi no Mi, Model: Yamata no Orochi. Although the fruit may not have seemed particularly strong in the anime, Japanese mythology suggests that it could have potentially surpassed Kaido's Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu. Sadly, despite its incredible potential, this Devil Fruit was wasted on one of the most useless characters in the series.

Orochi's Devil Fruit Should Have Been One of the Strongest in One Piece

Orochi's Hebi Hebi no Mi, Model: Yamata no Orochi was a Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit that allowed him to transform into a full eight-headed snake and a human-eight-headed snake hybrid at will. Additionally, as you may recall, the Devil Fruit boosted his survivability, allowing him to survive decapitation up to eight times.

While these abilities may not inherently seem too broken, the legend of Yamata no Orochi tells a different story. According to Japanese mythology, Yamata no Orochi was a massive serpent who possessed unique elemental powers, ranging from fire, lightning, water, and wind, etc. in each of its heads. It also had incredible regenerative abilities and could create natural disasters.

As such, had Kurozumi Orochi bothered to train using his Devil Fruit powers, he too, could have potentially unlocked the legend's elemental powers, regeneration, and gotten as big as Kaido in his dragon form.

The legend also states that Yamata no Orochi was capable of creating a legendary sword from its tail, implying that Kurozumi Orochi could have also manifested a similar ability. Hence, with so many potential powers, the Hebi Hebi no Mi, Model: Yamata no Orochi could have been one of the most overpowered Devil Fruits in One Piece. Unfortunately, in the hands of someone as cowardly as Orochi, it never came close to its true potential.

Why Orochi is One of the Worst Devil Fruit Users in One Piece

For starters, Kurozumi Orochi was one of the most incompetant fighters in the series. Despite possessing powers of a Mythical Zoan-type fruit, he never used any of the fruit's offensive powers to fight and instead used them to intimidate people. In fact, Orochi's greatest feat, which was to come back to life after being beheaded, was also a passive perk and not a display of his skill.

Even in his basic serpent form, Orochi should have been a terrifying opponent. With his massive size, extended reach, and ability to attack in multiple directions at once, the former Wano shogun had all the tools to become a foe as overwhelming as Kaido. Unfortunately, as he never really trained and hid behind Kaido to save his skin, Orochi never became a skilled fighter, wasting the Devil Fruit's immense potential.

Ultimately, Orochi's Devil Fruit serves as one of the biggest "what-ifs" in One Piece. Considering the legend it drew its inspiration from, the Devil Fruit's powers should have ideally been terrifying. Evidently, that wasn't the case. As such, Orochi's entire situation should act as a reminder that no matter how broken a Devil Fruit's powers might possibly be, it would amount to nothing if it was in the hands of someone unworthy.
