MSU hockey handles Colgate, completes holiday weekend sweep

Michigan State hockey completed a successful holiday weekend with a sweep-clinching victory on Friday night.

The Spartans never trailed this weekend en route to a two-game sweep of Colgate, including a 4-1 victory on Friday evening. Michigan State bounced back from getting swept on their home ice last week against Wisconsin, with the two-game series sweep this weekend of Colgate.

Eric Nilson got the Spartans on the board first late into the opening period. His goal gave Michigan State a 1-0 lead heading into the second period.

Less than a minute into the second period, Daniel Russell found the back of the net to push the Spartans' lead to 2-0. Colgate would respond with a power play goal a few minutes later to make it 2-1, but Ryker Lee would quickly push Michigan State's lead back to two goals on a beautiful play. The Spartans would lead 3-1 heading into the final intermission.

Russell would score one more time late in the third period to clinch the victory and sweep of Colgate.

With the win, Michigan State improves to 11-3-0 on the year. The Spartans now hold five weekend sweeps of foes on this season.

Next up for Michigan State is a highly-anticipated home-and-home series with rival Michigan next week. The Spartans will first host the Wolverines at Munn Ice Arena on Friday before heading to Ann Arbor, Mich. for the second game on Saturday.
