The Rest Is History podcast has released a new trailer for its upcoming two-part deep dive into the Beatles. The special will be hosted by historian Tom Holland and Beatles fan Conan O’Brien.
Produced by Apple and Disney+, The Rest is History's special is set to debut alongside the remastered and restored Beatles Anthology docuseries. The podcast will offer its audience access to the Beatles recordings and valuable material from the Anthology series. Holland and O’Brien will explore the band’s legacy through the history podcast.
Holland expressed the importance of the Beatles' impact on the music industry because they represented the massive cultural shifts of the 1960s and helped enhance them. He also explained how he believed modern music is still influenced by the iconic band.
I’d argue they’re historically significant because they act as lightning rods for everything that made the 1960s such a revolutionary decade. In many ways, we in the 21st century are still living in the aftermath of the ’60s – just as people in the 16th century lived in the wake of the 1520s. The cultural and ethical transformation is on that scale, and the Beatles were not only symbols of it, but active drivers of it.
O'Brien stated that the Beatles stood out because they rejected the standard norms of their era. Instead of focusing on a single genre, they did their own thing and created something entirely different from anything that came before them. Their departure from conventional music helped redefine the music industry.
The Beatles were a complete break from everything that came before. They were singer-songwriters who wrote their own music, and in so many ways, they broke the mold. Most groups at the time had a clear frontman — Dion and the Belmonts, for example — and there was real pressure on them to follow that model. For a moment, they were even Johnny and the Moondogs. But they always knew they were a group; the power was in the synergy between them, which was unusual then. They were a departure from almost everything that preceded them and remain as relevant today as they were in 1964.
This upcoming special comes after Holland and his co-host for The Rest Is History, Dominic Sandbrook, guest-starred on Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, where he reveals that he is an avid fan of their show and a Beatles superfan. Holland and Sandbrook also teamed up with Disney Entertainment's CEO Bob Iger for a project that studied Walt Disney’s life and the origins of Disneyland.
The Rest Is History’s Beatles special featuring Conan O’Brien will debut on Wednesday, December 3, on YouTube and all major podcast platforms.
