New mobile game Resident Evil Survival Unit has become a surprise hit, surpassing a major release milestone with over 2 million downloads. Survival Unit was released on November 18 via Google Play and the Apple App Store. Tying together decades of RE history with characters from across the franchise, it offers an alternate-universe look at a familiar story.
Now, Survival Unit has soared through the ranks, with over 2 million downloads in the ten days since its release, according to a joint statement by developers Aniplex Inc and Joycity Corporation (picked up by Eurogamer). At the time of writing, Survival Unit is also the 11th most-downloaded free game on Google Play, surpassing popular staples like Geometry Dash Lite and MapleStory Idle RPG.
Resident Evil Survival Unit Is A Hit

With over 2 million downloads, it's safe to say RE Survival Unit is a commercial hit. Eurogamer points out that it's greatly surpassed even mainline Resident Evil sales on mobile platforms; ten days after its iOS release, Resident Evil 7 had been downloaded just 83,000 times.
Although Survival Unit is decidedly different from the ordinary, perennially popular Resident Evil fare, the gap in downloads is understandable. Survival Unit is a real-time strategy game, designed from the bottom up to be played on mobile devices. It's also a new release that you can't play anywhere else, and features some of the most popular characters in the series in a brand-new story.
To contrast, by the time RE7 and Village hit iOS, many RE fans already owned copies, and so would be less likely to buy them again. These games, designed for console and PC play, were also a lot clunkier on mobile with control interfaces covering most of the screen.
Exact sales numbers and financial success for Survival Unit are a lot murkier, though. Although free-to-play, Survival Unit does allow for in-app purchases. However, they're not strictly required, and players can use codes to obtain some items for free.
The Developers Are Thrilled
And Players Can Claim A Special Reward
In their press release, Survival Unit developers Aniplex and Joycity celebrated the game's "outstanding global results," noting the speed with which this unconventional Resident Evil game has surpassed such a major milestone.
In an act of gratitude to the 2 million players who have already downloaded Survival Unit, Aniplex and Joycity are offering a unique in-game reward. Players can claim it by entering the code 2m Survivors on the promo code redemption screen.
Even though it's not exactly what most fans expected from the franchise, it's great to see Resident Evil finding success by branching out. If you need to ease the long wait for Requiem next year, Resident Evil Survival Unit could be one to watch.
