The Kansas City Chiefs will look back on the 31-28 loss to the Dallas Cowboys and think "what if" as they travel home.

Andy Reid's team did their best to hand the Cowboys the game with several missed opportunities and self-inflicted wounds, as 10 penalties, mostly on defense, were crippling and extended Dallas drives.

Now at 6-6, the Chiefs' season is in danger of going down the drain, and for a team that is used to making the AFC Championship game every year with Patrick Mahomes, this isn't what we are used to.

For Mahomes, when discussing the game, he knows what killed his team at AT&T Stadium.

"Just missed opportunities," Mahomes said. "Just like all the losses we've had this year. Getting the ball twice at midfield at the start of the second half, and not coming through and getting points at all. That stuff you can't do against good football teams, and we did that today."

Chiefs own worst enemy in Cowboys loss

One of the things the Chiefs have been known for since Mahomes took over the starting role is that they don't beat themselves in big moments.

We have seen so many times that Reid's team is all over their details, and in big spots, don't make back-breaking mistakes.

Well, they did against the Cowboys.

The 10 penalties were a blight on the stat sheet, as Trent McDuffie will be seeing CeeDee Lamb in his nightmares tonight, and then the offense punting on four straight possessions between the second and third quarters, before waking up in the fourth.

The Cowboys beat the Chiefs because they were the better team, but Kansas City certainly played a role in its downfall.
