LAWRENCE — Good, bad or indifferent, Kansas football coach Lance Leipold and his program had to move on quicker than normal from this past weekend’s drubbing at Iowa State.

The Jayhawks have a short week, with the regular season finale against Utah set to kick off on at 11 a.m. (CT) on Friday, Nov. 28, in Lawrence — as opposed to on a Saturday. Whatever disappointment and frustration lingered from the defeat at ISU didn’t have as much time to stew in the minds of those at KU.

And Leipold’s players were challenged to think about how they wanted to finish this season and how they want this team to be remembered.

But the benefits and drawbacks of a short week aren’t the only thing up for debate, as Kansas (5-6, 3-5 Big 12) looks ahead to its last chance to clinch bowl eligibility. There’s also the potential that being in a situation where there are no more chances to for KU to achieve that goal could be either be something that serves as a boost or takes away from it.

That question was posed to Leipold earlier this week.

“I don’t know if I’ve given that a thought of, a benefit or not,” Leipold told reporters. “I guess I’ve taken an approach where we know what we’re up against to try to get to bowl eligibility, and as a building full of prideful competitors, that you’re going to prepare and go out and play your hardest, to the best of your ability.”

For many on Kansas’ roster, this will be their last game in college, and against a formidable opponent. Utah (9-2, 6-2) has been one of the best in the Big 12 Conference and is in the top 15 of both the US LBM Coaches Poll and College Football Playoff rankings. The Utes will also be the third straight team KU will have the opportunity to clinch bowl eligibility against, following losses at Arizona and Iowa State.

According to Leipold, conversations back in August within the program addressed how fast it can feel like this all flies by and how important it is to maximize opportunities.

Kansas was in this position a year ago, albeit on the road against Baylor, with a chance to clinch bowl eligibility in a regular-season finale. The 2024 campaign ended with defeat and a 5-7 record.
