Paramount's planned R-Rated Live-Action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles adaptation, The Last Ronin, has received a positive update after the project went quiet last year.

The darker comic-based film, with Michelangelo serving as the last surviving Turtle, has raised questions about its future following months without updates. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, co-creator Kevin Eastman said the movie has not been abandoned. "I don't think the movie's off the table," Eastman said. "I think it's just delayed... I think it will happen."

Paramount announced this live-action project as an adaptation of The Last Ronin comics, and it was promised to follow the last surviving Michelangelo seeking revenge after the death of his brothers. He aims to take out their killer, Shredder's grandson. The storyline is significantly darker than most franchise entries, aiming at older audiences who were fans of the original stories.

The lack of updates followed the success and renewed focus of 2023's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, directed by Jeff Rowe and Kyler Spears and written and produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. The studio is expanding on Mutant Mayhem with a planned sequel, while this darker live-action film is on hold.

There is continued interest in this version as The Last Ronin storyline expands in comics. Eastman and Tom Waltz are developing additional installments, and this gives the franchise an even larger foundation, suggesting that this story remains a priority.

Unlike previous live-action adaptations, such as the 1990-1993 trilogy and the 2014-2016 reboot versions, The Last Ronin will be the franchise's first R-rated release. Although the original comics in the 1980s were darker, recent films have traditionally targeted younger audiences with more family-friendly versions. This darker tone draws comparisons to mature comic adaptations such as Logan, Joker, and Deadpool.

And unlike most versions of this story and characters, The Last Ronin takes place in a dystopian future timeline where the Turtles have already lost, and rather than a traditional team adventure, Michelangelo is operating alone in New York City. This adaptation will give a more character-driven, somber tone than previous films.

The project's status comes as the TMNT franchise is changing following the Skydance-Paramount merger. Eastman acknowledges that the series is in a transitional period, and this is usually a time when studios reassess ongoing projects and release plans.

Because Eastman co-created the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and remains closely involved with franchise projects, his comments carry a lot of weight for fans tracking this new adaptation. Although this isn't an official announcement, updates from one of the creators usually signal whether there is still active consideration for projects like this.

Actress Judith Hoag, who portrayed April O'Neil in the 1990 live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, also revealed she had been approached about appearing in The Last Ronin before the project was shelved, suggesting the adaptation had moved into early casting discussions. With creators still optimistic about its future, the film remains a possibility despite the lack of a timeline.
