PITTSBURG, KS — The Missouri Southern Lions got revenge in a rematch victory over the Pitt State Gorillas in 83-75 finish.
The first time the two teams met this season was at Missouri Southern, which resulted in a 82-71 win in favor of Pitt State.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThis time around, Tyrone Wright Jr. set the tone off of the opening tip with a put back dunk. Gavyn Elkamil and Isaiah Atwater would follow with back-to-back buckets inside the arc to spark some early Lion offense.
A few plays later, Pitt State’s Ethan Sage came up with a huge block resulting in an and-one on the other end from David Cobin Jr.
However, Wright Jr. (20 points, eight rebounds), Elkamil (20 points), and Atwater (14 points) led the way to get the visitors out to a 34-26 lead at the half.
Opening up the second half of action, the Lions jumped out to its largest lead of 16 points.
The Gorillas were able to piece together some offense while Connor Rogers (19 points) sunk a mid-range jumper to bring the hosts back within eight points.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementWith minutes to spare, Jaden Taylor would drop 12 of his 18 points off of the bench to help guide the Lions to a 83-75 victory.
“We’ve had two tough losses at home. Two really close losses… we needed this and we came in hungry,” Southern head coach Sam McMahon explains. “I’m proud of our guys. They played extremely well, extremely tough, and that’s what it takes to beat a really good team like Pitt State.”
The Lions will return to action Thursday, February 19th at 7:30 p.m. to host Fort Hays State, while the Gorillas will host Nebraska-Kearney.
