Netflix abruptly canceled an incredible graphic novel adaptation nearly six years ago, but Mike Flanagan's upcoming Stephen King adaptation could be its perfect replacement.
There was a time when adaptations of black comedy graphic novels, like The End of the F...ing World, dominated Netflix's streaming charts. This is when Netflix gave another graphic novel adaptation a shot and even promoted it as one of its most exciting coming-of-age TV shows. Unfortunately, things did not go as planned, and the show was canceled after one season despite having a promising start.
Although the show will never get a second chance, Mike Flanagan's exciting Stephen King adaptation could fill the void it left behind.
Netflix’s Decision To Cancel I’m Not Okay With This After 1 Season Was Heavily Criticized
I Am Not Okay With This had a Ronald Dahl meets Stephen King energy, where its first season came off as the perfect combination of Matilda and Carrie's best tropes. Even the show's performances, especially from Sophia Lillis and Wyatt Oleff, were phenomenal. After watching I Am Not Okay With This season 1's cliffhanger ending, it was hard not to see how it was the beginning of something big with immense potential and ambition.
Unfortunately, despite earning rave reviews from viewers and critics and having a lot more stories to tell, I Am Not Okay With This was canceled despite initially being renewed.
Owing to its small-town setting, compelling character beats, and coming-of-age themes, the show could have been the perfect Stranger Things rival. However, like many other shows that came out before or during the COVID-19 pandemic, it experienced delays in production and ballooned budgets. As a result, it became another unfinished product that lay dead in Netflix's graveyard of controversial cancellations.
After all these years, it seems unlikely that I Am Not Okay With This will ever get a second chance. Viewers who miss the series, though, can look forward to Mike Flanagan's upcoming Stephen King adaptation.
Mike Flanagan’s Carrie Can Ease The Pain Of I’m Not Okay With This’ Cancellation
Sissy Spacek as Carrie White in Carrie (1976).
Mike Flanagan is adapting Stephen King's Carrie. Considering how Carrie has been adapted multiple times in the past, it is hard not to question whether the show should even happen. However, with Flanagan at its helm, the Stephen King show already seems exciting. The horror auteur has previously displayed his ability to spin a compelling yarn into classic horror literature with Netflix shows like The Haunting of Hill House.
With Carrie, too, he will give audiences a more modern interpretation of the original Stephen King story. He will achieve this by ensuring that it incorporates present-day technology and dabbles with themes around bullying that the new generation finds relatable.

Since I Am Not Okay With This also often feels like a modern retelling of Stephen King's Carrie, the Mike Flanagan show could be its perfect replacement. Netflix seemingly made a mistake by not giving I Am Not Okay With This a second chance, but the Flanagan show will likely not meet the same fate.

Carrie is an adaptation of Stephen King's iconic novel of the same name, which tells the story of a bullied youth who develops supernatural abilities. Unlike previous adaptations of the work, this version—helmed by Mike Flanagan—will be a series instead of a feature film.
