Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its sequel are finding new life on streaming, but those waiting for the third movie will need to be patient.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has been a hit on Netflix in recent weeks, but its success on streaming is a brutal reminder of the franchise's current release challenges. Released in 2018, the animated movie from Sony Pictures centered on Miles Morales' version of Spider-Man, voiced by Shameik Moore as the Marvel character.

Into the Spider-Verse instantly emerged as one of the best Spider-Man movies ever made, and it even won Best Animated Feature at the Oscars. While the story itself was the perfect blend of humor and heartfelt emotion, much of the praise also stemmed from the stunning animation style.

It's no surprise that Sony Pictures and Marvel went ahead with a sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which captured the same visual magic as the first movie, while featuring even more memorable Marvel characters. Though the series hasn't had a new entry since 2023, it's certainly having a resurgence as of late.

Despite being released eight years ago, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse's intrigue hasn't slowed down. According to FlixPatrol, the first Spider-Verse installment has been trending in Netflix's Top 10 Movies list for over two weeks. The movie, which is also highlighted by Hailee Steinfeld's portrayal as Spider-Gwen, is also doing very well in Netflix's Top 10 Kids Movies ranking.

With Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse finding new life by streaming on Netflix, it seems like some viewers are also searching out the 2023 sequel. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is currently available to stream on Disney+, where the sequel has also grabbed a spot on the streamer's Top 10 Movies list this past week.

Spider-Verse fans, old and new alike, will be happy to know that the third movie in the trilogy, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, has already been announced. Based on Across the Spider-Verse's cliffhanger ending involving another Miles, any extended wait for the next sequel was going to be tough. Then the movie began facing unavoidable delays.

The Spider-Verse Franchise's Resurgence On Streaming Is Great, But The Third Movie Isn't Coming Until 2027

Any resurgence in popularity for the Spider-Verse movies should be seen as a positive. That said, increased interest in the series also brings attention to the franchise's current status. We know Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is in development, but the sequel is arriving much later than expected. In fact, Beyond the Spider-Verse was originally slated to release in March 2024.

Now, Beyond the Spider-Verse is set to release on June 18, 2027, after various delays and a few scheduling tweaks from Sony. While rewatching the Spider-Verse movies on streaming, it's a harsh reminder to think that the third movie could have come out nearly two years ago if everything had gone as planned, but this is not the kind of movie that can be rushed.

At one point, there was only supposed to be one Spider-Verse sequel, but Across the Spider-Verse was then split into two separate movies. In addition to production-related delays linked to the story and animation process, seeing as it had become a separate project, Beyond the Spider-Verse was also affected by the Hollywood Labor Strikes, setting the project back further.

There's no doubt that the Spider-Verse movies are extremely high quality in terms of animation and storytelling, all of which take immense time to get right. There's also the voice work that needs to be done, and the actors' availability to make that work. Until then, we'll have to stick to watching Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse on streaming or allowing Spider-Man: Brand New Day to carry us to 2027.
