Giant Groot bigger than the Earth looming over the planet.
Groot is stoic, grounded, and wise — while he may be an unlikely superhero candidate to lead The Guardians of the Galaxy (TGOTG), if you think about it, he's actually the best option. To state the obvious, he's (literally) an old soul and a calming presence in times of chaos and corruption; and as the eldest, has a lifetime of knowledge to draw from and share.
His comic debut in 1960 (Tales To Astonish #13) — whose character was conceived by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Larry Lieber — means that he predates the other motley crew of superheroes by at least a decade. Star-Lord/Peter Quill's first appearance was in 1976 (Marvel Preview #4); Rocket Raccoon was in 1976 (Marvel preview #7); Gamora was in 1975 (Strange Tales #180); and Drax in 1973 (The Invisible Iron Man #55). Therefore, this sentient and majestic tree-creature has clearly been through (and seen) some stuff in his lifetime.

So much so that he's not only experienced (literal) physical growth, but a spiritual and morally-inclined one as well. A testament to this is that while he was first introduced as a villain, he changed his ways and joined the forces of heroic good in 2006 in 'Annihilation: Conquest'.
Letting his actions speak more than his words
Groot's a do-er.
Groot bursting out of Doom's castle in Marvel Comics' Secret Wars
Per his type of species as a Flora Colossus from Planet X — his home world — it's virtually impossible to understand their language. It's due to their species' physical limitations and stiff larynxes, preventing them from speaking any (human) language. That is why he can only utter (the now iconic phrase) "I am Groot", but his tone and cadence has more than compensated for this, and allowed many to understand what he's trying to communicate.
As a result, Groot is very much of the 'take mindful action(s) first, and ask questions later' mantra, and always does it in the best interests of the group. This was most evident in his self-sacrifice for the survival of TGOTG team, saving everyone during their battle against the Badoon in 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1: Earthfall'. Thankfully, because he's immortal, he was rendered a mere sapling/twig once more and 'reborn' as the mischievous Baby Groot.
Ultimately, Groot is a natural-born leader.
And he's tall, dark, (and handsome) to boot.
As a towering figure who is very much the yin to his pal Rocket Raccoon's yang (AKA impulsive and hot-headed), The Guardians of the Galaxy would be lucky to have Groot fronting their motley-crew superhero squad. Perhaps it's time for Star-Lord to set his ego aside, and let this gentle-giant have his moment to shine in the sun.
