While not as outright ‘bad’ as big brothers Phil (Steve McFadden) and Grant (Ross Kemp), Sam Mitchell (Kim Medcalf) has always had an iffy moral compass in EastEnders. Though when she manipulates an incredibly vulnerable Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley) to get her hands on Phil’s cash, it seems she’s abandoned it all together.
Sam left Walford on incredibly bad terms with Phil, but desperate times call for desperate measures, and Sam’s situation is incredibly desperate.
‘Sam is nervous after the way she left the last time, especially how things were left with Phil! But then again, Sam’s not the kind of person who spends a lot of time thinking about the past, she lives in the moment.
‘Sam is straight over to Phil’s and she’s looking for money, and gets Nigel embroiled in her scheme this time,’ Kim said of her characters mindset upon her return.
Heading straight for No. 55, Sam has eyes set firmly on Phil’s safe. Well, the hefty amounts of cash he keeps in it, anyway. The only obstacle in her way is poor Nigel, who, believing her to be his adoptive daughter, Clare (Gemma Bissix), allows her to take the money.

Unfortunately, her speedy getaway is scuppered when she’s faced by former-murder-co-conspirator and frenemy, Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan), who accuses her of being behind her still-ongoing stalking ordeal.
‘Zoe is one of the last people that Sam wants to see,’ Kim explained.
‘Coming face-to-face with Zoe is triggering for Sam and brings up a whole series of memories that she’d much rather forget. So, she tries to avoid having any long, deep conversations with Zoe.’
On Sam’s reaction to Zoe’s accusations, Kim said: ‘You can’t blame Zoe for suspecting Sam, they’ve got history! They both shared this terrible experience that traumatised them in their own different ways.
‘Sam is adamant that she’s got her mind on other, far more important things. She tells Zoe that she’s here to sort her own life out, not to destroy Zoe’s.’

While their on-screen meeting certainly isn’t friendly, off-screen, Kim was delighted to be reunited with Michelle.
‘It’s been absolutely fantastic. Michelle is such a lovely person, and it’s been brilliant to be back on set with her again.
It’s had us taking a trip down memory lane to remember where our characters were when we were last in the show, and what was going on in our lives in Walford. Having this chance to reminisce together has been lovely.’

Meanwhile, Phil realises he’s a hefty chunk of change down, and with Nigel’s hazy description, heads straight over to Harry’s Barn to accuse Nicola Mitchell (Laura Doddington), though realises his mistake when he sees his slippery sister in the Square.
She evades him, however, and heads to McClunky’s for some southern-fried goodness and a catch up with her son, Ricky Branning (Frankie Day), where she’s spotted by Jack Branning (Scott Maslen).
Seriously, despite not wanting to be seen, she may as well have announced her return on the Albert Square community page!

Though Sam is desperate to leave, Jack’s pressing leads her to reveal a heart breaking secret about her health – she’s found a lump in her breast and she’s terrified that it’s cancer.
On how Sam is feeling in the moment, Kim revealed: ‘This is the second time that Sam has found a lump in her breast and 20 years ago, she felt very lucky that it wasn’t anything serious.
