James Beaufort (Damian Hardung) and Ruby Bell (Harriet Herbig-Matten) in 'Maxton Hall'Image via Prime Video
Spoiler Alert: This list includes spoilers for 'Maxton Hall' Season 2.Nobody is safe in Maxton Hall, Prime Video's icier, European counterpart to The Summer I Turned Pretty. Scholarship student Ruby Bell (Harriet Herbig-Matten) and legacy heir James Beaufort (Damian Hardung) got off on the wrong foot back in Season 1. Like any tale of enemies to lovers, Ruby and James discover that they're much more alike than they realize. However, getting into a relationship isn't so simple for James. As it is within the top one percent, people like James do not fall in love with the less fortunate, like Ruby.
They say that love conquers all, but it'll take more than that for Ruby and James. Following the sudden passing of his mother, Cordelia Beaufort (Clelia Sarto), James is pressured by his father, Mortimer Beaufort (Fedja van Huêt), to take over the family company despite his reluctance. To ensure James is pulled into the path that's been paved for him, Mortimer does everything to sabotage his son's relationship with Ruby — resulting in Season 2's shocking cliffhanger of an ending. With more questions than answers revealed, here are the questions I have after the Maxton Hall Season 2 finale.
1 What Is the Future of the Beaufort Company?

Ever since Season 1 of Maxton Hall, James has been poised to be the heir of the Beaufort fashion house. That is, until he crossed paths with Ruby. The closer he becomes with his foe-turned-lover, the more he realizes that he never actually wanted to inherit the family business in the first place. He's just the "golden child" molded by his parents so that the Beaufort family can continue to live on.
Everything changes in Season 2. James sees his father Mortimer for who he actually is: a conniving abuser who would sacrifice anyone for the company. When Mortimer decides to take the fashion house down a more distasteful route, James is against his plans. His son breaks the last straw when he chooses his lacrosse championship over a crucial meeting, resulting in Mortimer losing a key investor. For all of Mortimer's cutthroatness and business aptitude, he's not representing the Beaufort company well.
2 What Is Percy's Relationship With the Late Cordelia Beaufort?

Introduced as a recurring character in Season 1, Percy (Hyun Wanner) is the dedicated chauffeur to James and his twin sister, Lydia Beaufort (Sonja Weißer). A man of few words, Percy is one of the few people James genuinely respects. In the little time they share, and mostly in the car, the two can be found trading philosophical banter or sharing astute observations. Percy is also fiercely loyal to his master, often the one driving James to his secret meetings with Ruby.
In Season 2, Percy reveals to Ruby that he is a third-generation employee at the Beaufort house. As a child, he spent many years with the Beaufort family itself. However, it looks like Percy might've done more than just hang around at the estate. In the season finale, Percy is seen visiting Cordelia's grave all by himself, even putting flowers on her final resting place. But what's even more striking is the key necklace he's wearing, which he holds and longingly stares at. It seems there might be more to Percy's relationship with Cordelia, possibly a past forbidden romance.
3 What Happened Between Ophelia and Mortimer?

James and Lydia welcome an unexpected guest at their mother's funeral: their estranged aunt Ophelia Beaufort (Dagny Dewath). The sister to the late Cordelia, Ophelia, is more than happy to see her niece and nephews after all these years. However, Mortimer isn't too pleased with her presence. If anything, he considers Ophelia a threat.
In the middle of Cordelia's funeral, Mortimer and Ophelia get into a verbal spat. Mortimer claims that Ophelia is a power-hungry wrench who's after the Beaufort fortune. Ophelia retaliates, claiming that she and Cordelia have remained in touch behind Mortimer's back. Ophelia is also determined to expose the truth to James and Lydia, whatever that is. From the look on Mortimer's face, Ophelia knows a thing or two about his dark side.
4 Did Cordelia Actually Leave Nothing for Her Children in Her Will?

With Cordelia being the direct descendant of the Beaufort fashion house, it only makes sense that she holds the most assets. In the aftermath of her death, James, Lydia, and Mortimer attend a reading of Cordelia's will. They're also joined by Ophelia, much to Mortimer's disgust. James, Lydia, and Ophelia are assured that they'll inherit the Beaufort fortune. In a surprise twist, the will states that all of her assets, including the Beaufort company itself, will be inherited by none other than Mortimer.
What's even more shocking is that Cordelia doesn't leave a single penny for her two beloved children. James wholeheartedly believes that his mother wouldn't do this, and is sure that Mortimer might have tainted the will before the meeting. But considering the supposed past relationship Percy might've had with Cordelia, and the secret key he's been holding on to, it might be possible that James and Lydia's real bequeathments have yet to be revealed.
5 How Will Ruby Bell's Family Cope With Their Financial Loss?

Throughout Seasons 1 and 2, Mortimer has made it clear that he despises Ruby. He believes that people like the Beauforts do not associate themselves with the working class, seeing them as nothing more than gold-hungry vultures. Much to Mortimer's annoyance, James doesn't subscribe to his father's beliefs. The moment Mortimer realizes that his son is about to "jeopardize" his future for a girl like Ruby, he decides to make Ruby's life a living hell.
Ruby continuously assures James that she can handle his father's threats. But Mortimer crosses the line when he buys out her mother's bakery, effectively leaving Ruby's mother unemployed without severance pay. With her father unable to work due to his physical disability, Ruby's mother is the sole breadwinner of the house. Now that Mortimer has cut off their only viable income, Ruby might have to reconsider her future.
6 Who Sent the Fake Picture of Ruby Bell and Graham Sutton?

The Season 2 finale wouldn't be complete without its jaw-dropping plot twist. Maxton Hall plays with fire with the show's most controversial relationship: Lydia and her English teacher, Graham Sutton (Eidin Jalali). As an underage student, Lydia is clearly a victim of grooming by her much older partner. Lydia is convinced that after graduation, she and Sutton could openly love each other. Worse still, Lydia is revealed to be pregnant with Sutton's twins. In the penultimate episode of Season 2, the unsuspecting Sutton and Lydia are caught kissing in the woods by Cyril Vega (Ben Felipe) and Elaine Ellington (Eli Riccardi), who even snap a photo of the forbidden couple from afar. Later, Principal Lexington (Thomas Douglas) receives an anonymous text hinting at a picture of Sutton and Lydia.
However, in the Season 2 finale, it's revealed that Lexington actually receives an image of Sutton and Ruby, with the teacher holding Ruby's hands, suggesting that they're the ones in a taboo relationship. For context, this is a photo James took in Season 1 as blackmail, which is meant to make an innocent Ruby look like she was involved with Sutton. Since Mortimer had previously hacked James' phone, it suggests that he may be the one responsible for sending the picture. As a result of the fabricated image, Ruby is immediately expelled from Maxton Hall and loses her chance of getting into Oxford.
7 Will Mortimer Find Out About Lydia's Pregnancy?

Throughout the series, Mortimer has openly expressed how much he'd prefer having James represent the company instead of Lydia. Before her relationship with Sutton, Lydia was involved with someone else who shared her private photos online, which Mortimer had to deal with. As a result, Mortimer only sees his daughter as a careless, emotional wreck who should not be trusted with the future of the company.
With Lydia choosing to keep her twins, it is only a matter of time before Mortimer discovers her pregnancy. Considering their now-strained relationship following the will reading, Mortimer probably couldn't care less about what will happen to her. All he needed was James to be put on the right track. Still, an underage, pregnant daughter and a taboo relationship could instantly tarnish the Beauforts' reputation.
