Netflix had no shortage of anime offerings in 2025. From exclusives like The Summer Hikaru Died and Sakamoto Days, to anime streaming on other services like Dandadan, the king of streaming had a lot to offer fans in 2025. That's why it's so surprising that they haven't even released their biggest anime of the year yet.
The Netflix Anime X account recently confirmed that the critically acclaimed anime movie 100 METERS is coming to Netflix on December 31st.
The film will be exclusive to Netflix in North America, and based on the trailer provided by Netflix, this new anime film has the chance to compete against 2025's other big anime films like Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle and Chainsaw Man - The Movie: Reze Arc.
100 METERS Is 2025's Anime Movie Sleeper Hit
As mentioned by Netflix's post, 100 METERS is based on the first manga by Orb: On the Movements of the Earth creator Uoto. Orb ranks among Netflix's best anime in 2024 and 2025, so hype for 100 METERS is building at a dizzying speed.
The movie was created by the new anime studio Rock 'n' Roll Mountain and got a September release in Japan. The film currently holds a 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Though that's only an aggregate of 14 critics, the audience score sits at 92% with 50+ reviews, showing that anime fans are loving it as much as the critics.
Based on the trailer provided by Netflix, it's easy to see why. The trailer promises a dizzying tale of passion and the dedication it takes to truly make it in a sport.
The film did get a release in American theaters courtesy of GKids back in October, and it's currently unclear if Netflix has the rights to that dub. Based on the fact that the trailer they posted is entirely in Japanese, though, signs point to only the sub being available.
Why 100 METERS Could Be Netflix's Biggest Anime of 2025
100 METERS stands out as Netflix's most unique anime offering of 2025. With its fluid animation and apparent focus on realism, 100 METERS shares more than a little in common with the best sports anime of all time, Ping Pong: The Animation.
Given its uniqueness, there is a chance for the movie to make a splash on the streaming service. While Netflix might think of big shonen series like Dandadan as the main money-makers, it is their more thoughtful anime that have the biggest impact.
All signs point to 100 METERS' December 31st release being huge for Netflix. This is one that anime fans of all stripes won't want to miss.
