Marvel recast Iron Man for a multiversal Marvel Cinematic Universe release, and a few years later, the actor now returns for a new Avengers project. When one thinks of Iron Man or the Avengers, the first name that comes to mind is Robert Downey Jr. After all, the actor started the MCU's slate of projects, shaping the franchise.
While Downey is set to lead Avengers: Doomsday's cast as Doctor Doom, there have been no updates on the actor reprising his role as Tony Stark, nor any Iron Man variants appearing in the upcoming MCU movie. That said, Marvel has released a new Avengers project, and while it is not part of the MCU, it does feature Downey's official Iron Man replacement.
The MCU's Iron Man Recast Actor Returns In New Avengers Release
Captain Carter with her Avengers team in What If...? season 2
On November 14, Marvel released LEGO Avengers: Strange Tails on Disney+. The new Avengers TV show is a two-part event series that spotlights Hawkeye, with the hero having to assemble a new Avengers team to take on the mind-controlled original Avengers and the villain behind them. Marvel's new Avengers series features Mick Wingert's return as Iron Man.
Wingert is known to MCU fans as the voice of Tony Stark in Disney+'s What If...? series. Throughout the course of the three-season MCU multiverse series, Wingert voiced multiple versions of Iron Man from different universes, effectively taking on the role from Downey in the franchise. LEGO Avengers: Strange Tails is not an MCU release, but it shares its Iron Man actor with the franchise.
Marvel's New Avengers TV Show Uses The Armor Robert Downey Jr. Only Donned Once
Tony Stark's Hulkbuster fighting the Hulk in Johannesburg in Avengers: Age of Ultron
Wingert's Iron Man is not one of the mind-controlled Marvel heroes in the new Avengers series. Instead, he assists Hawkeye in taking down Meryet Karim, the event series' villain. To do so, Iron Man comes up with one of his most powerful armors for the project's final fight. In doing so, Downey's MCU replacement actor gets to "don" the armor RDJ only used once.
LEGO Avengers: Strange Tails' final fight sees Iron Man arrive with his Hulkbuster armor. The Marvel hero fights the Hulk, who has been mind-controlled, with his new suit. That reminded me of the only time we saw Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man wear the Hulkbuster armor in the MCU. In 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, Stark also fought the Hulk.
The Hulkbuster allowed Tony to apprehend the Hulk as he went on a rampage, which was caused by Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch messing with his head. While the Hulkbuster would later appear again in the MCU, it was worn by Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner in Avengers: Infinity War. As such, Marvel's Iron Man recast uses the suit Downey wore once in the new Avengers release.
