A new trailer for Pokémon Legends: Z-A DLC has revealed an all-new type of Mega Evolution set to arrive in-game this winter. The action RPG spinoff of the perennially popular Pokémon franchise is expecting its first DLC, Mega Dimension, on December 10. The DLC will include new story content, as well as several new Mega Evolutions.
Now, The Pokémon Company has revealed an all-new type of Mega Evolution that'll debut in Legends Z-A with the DLC: Z Mega Evolution. A new trailer on YouTube shows off the mechanic, which will alter Pokémon's stats in a different way from typical Mega Evolution.
Mega Lucario Z Joins Mega Dimension DLC
Lucario Introduces A New Form Of Mega Evolution
Prominently featured in the trailer is Mega Lucario Z, the first Pokémon to undergo the new type of Mega Evolution. The visual differences are pretty apparent: Mega Lucario Z is a palette-swapped version of Mega Lucario, with black ears and a blue pattern on its face. Its appendages also appear in a much lighter blue, and it also sports an additional braid hanging down from the top of its head.
As of now, Lucario is the only Pokémon we know of who'll be able to undergo this type of evolution in Mega Dimensions. It's unclear whether Z Mega Evolution will be more of a plot point in the DLC, with several Pokémon able to use it, or whether Lucario will be a unique case.
It does make sense that Z-A is using Lucario to introduce this new mechanic, though. Every player automatically gets a free Lucario once they've completed the main story, which is likely a requirement for starting the DLC. Without getting into spoilers, it's a pretty plot-heavy Pokémon, especially near the end of the main story, and makes sense as a jumping-off point for the DLC.
How The New Z Mega Evolution Works
Power Over Speed
Of course, Z Mega Evolution is more than just a cosmetic change: it alters how the Pokémon fights in battle, too. Regular Mega Evolution generally raises a Pokémon's base stats, concentrating on what they ordinarily do best: for Lucario, that means increasing its attack.
Z Mega Evolution, however, works differently: according to The Pokémon Company, Mega Lucario Z creates a shielding aura around itself, using it "to surround its entire body, cloaking itself to increase its defense, flexibility, and agility." It can then channel this field of energy into different parts of its body, strengthening its attacks.
Z Mega Evolution is also more short-lived than regular Mega Evolution: once you activate it, the meter runs out much more quickly. To compensate for that, though, your Pokémon will be able to string together attacks much more quickly than usual, ensuring you make the most of a brief opportunity.
We also know that Mega Lucario Z is a Fighting- and Steel-type, just like Mega Lucario; it's unclear whether Z Mega Evolution will cause other Pokémon to undergo type changes as well.
Mega Lucario Z is just one of many Mega Evolved forms set to arrive in the DLC, along with Mega Chimecho, Mega Baxcalibur, Mega Zeraora, and Mega Raichu X and Y. You can find out more about this new form of evolution when Mega Dimensions comes to Pokémon Legends: Z-A on December 10.
