The new DC Universe has yet to announce when the Justice League will join the franchise as it deals with all the baggage that came with the old DCEU movie franchise, but James Gunn has already found the perfect way to deal with the Justice League issue in 2026. The last time the team was seen was in Zack Snyder's Justice League.

The 2021 DC movie released on HBO Max was the director's cut of 2017's theatrical Justice League movie. While Snyder had Justice League sequels planned, they are unlikely to ever see the light of day. After the end of the DCEU, Gunn decided to reboot DC's shared universe, and it has brought one complication to DC's future movies when it comes to the Justice League.

While many DCEU movies were controversial, fans were supportive of most of the Justice League movie's cast. That was made clear when Henry Cavill was announced to be out as Superman, with David Corenswet later replacing the actor. While Corenswet's Superman was embraced by fans, Cavill's exit was controversial, and Gunn's Superman movie did not surpass Man of Steel at the worldwide box office.

Reportedly, none of the DCEU Justice League actors will return to their roles in the DCU. As such, Gunn's DC franchise should have to deal with a similar level of controversy to that of Cavill being recast when characters like Wonder Woman and Batman join the franchise, but not with Gal Gadot and Ben Affleck as the DC heroes.

The DCU not only has to leave behind the DCEU versions of the characters, but it has the difficult task of recasting major heroes and establishing a deep connection between them and audiences. Given the divisive nature of the DCEU movies, there will always be fans on both sides of the fence regarding recasting, and a 2026 release offers the perfect solution.

A 2026 Movie Actively Fixes The DC Universe's Justice League Problem

Cavill being removed as Superman proved itself controversial at first, so just ditching all the Justice League cast could end up doing the same, which the DCU does not need as it starts to grow. As such, the fact that 2026's Supergirl movie brings back Aquaman star Jason Momoa is perfect. Gunn shows that he does not have issues with the Justice League stars.

Supergirl creates a bridge between both franchises, while giving Momoa an arguably better fit for him in the DCU, with the actor leaving Aquaman behind to play Lobo, DC's violent cosmic bounty hunter, in the DC Universe. The casting should put to rest any Justice League recasting concerns, showing there is a path forward at DC for both those heroes and their actors.
