Speaking to the media at a public event earlier today, Real Madrid legend Toni Kroos opened up on the problems that the team was facing this season under Xabi Alonso.

The Merengues are currently on a run of only one win from five matches in all competitions, and there is immense pressure on the players as well as the manager.

One of the major issues for Real Madrid has been the lack of control from midfield, something that has been missing since Kroos’ retirement.

There has been constant chatter about how the team is missing the former German international and must sign a player of a similar profile.

When asked about the constant comparisons with his time at the club and the lack of a player of his calibre in midfield, Kroos was clear in his response:

“Don’t always talk about those who came before, because that doesn’t help anyone.”

The former midfielder made it clear that he does not want his name used as a constant reference point to explain the team’s current struggles. For him, the focus must be on the present, not on what was.

“I don’t need people to tell me that they miss me,” he noted.

The German insisted that his cycle ended peacefully, and that the current Real Madrid team have the quality to build their own new successful path with the players in the squad now.

“I left with a smile and a good title,” Kroos recalled.

“They have to find a way to win with other types of players. I’m the first to want Madrid to win so that this stops.”

Kroos was also quick to dismiss any idea of acting as a mentor to Xabi Alonso.

“I’m coaching a youth team, I don’t have much advice for Xabi right now,” he said with a smile.

The Real Madrid icon also reminded everyone that his partnership with Casemiro and Luka Modric belongs to another time and should not be compared with the current team.

“They are two different generations and it is important to adapt to what you have. I’m not saying that one is better than the other, they are different types of players, but that doesn’t mean better or worse. It’s just another way of playing,” he stated.

Kroos, who had previously been critical of Vinicius Jr.’s behaviour, discussed the Brazilian international’s growth at Real Madrid, saying:

“It’s been wonderful to see his development. Sometimes he loses focus during the game, but as a person he’s wonderful. He’s being pressured by opponents, rival fans… he’s young and can handle it better.”

The former midfielder also remarked that he does not sense nervousness in the team despite the noise around them.

“Maybe some things will go well and others won’t, but I haven’t seen anyone getting too nervous,” Kroos said.

“They have the players to win everything. It’s just a question of finding the right formula.”
