A couple went no-contact with the husband's mom, but it didn't keep her from showing up at their house in an incident that went viral when the wife shared footage from their doorbell camera.
Taylor McDaniel, user taylormcdaniel48 on TikTok, drew more than 12 million views total on three videos showing her mother-in-law (MIL) apparently disrespecting boundaries drawn by her son.
'Constant Disrespect'
In the initial view, McDaniel's MIL could be seen trying to open the couple's door and, upon finding it locked, hammering on it while insisting that she needed to see her son.
"POV: Your husband tells his mother she can’t come around because of the constant disrespect and boundary breaking," McDaniel wrote in the caption of the video.
McDaniel also shared a video of her MIL peaking into their bedroom window at 10 p.m.
"We forgave her after this one," McDaniel wrote in the caption.
...'This is crazy'
In another follow-up video, McDaniel explained more about the situation.
She said that in the initial viral video, she woke up before her husband and let him sleep, since he had been working all week.
Something, however, was clearly wrong: Her children were stressed out, because they could hear their grandmother banging on the door.
"So I open the door," McDaniel said, adding, "She pushes me and my kids: 'Move. I've got to get to my son.'"
McDaniel didn't argue and her MIL ran back to the bedroom, waking her son and informing him that if she doesn't pay $6,500, she was going to have to go to jail.
Family 'Ruptures'
Rin Reczek is a Ph.D. sociology professor at the Ohio State University and the author of Families We Lose, a book on family estrangement slated for release in August 2026.
Reczek told Newsweek in an email that one of the primary reasons families become estranged is because adult children aren't treated as equals by their parents.
"This need for equality includes the desire for autonomy and mutual determination," Reczek said.
"As such, these adult children feel their parents never really transition into seeing them as equal adults, but rather see their parents as maintaining a hierarchical 'honor thy father and mother' dynamic.
"For those adult children (and children-in-law) who value autonomy, equality and mutuality, this can cause family ruptures."
According to Reczek, fathers are far more commonly estranged than mothers.
"However, given the fact that women exert more labor on average to their children when they are young, it might be the case that mothers do expect contact when children reach adulthood," Reczek said, adding, "This may result in heightened stress and strain for mothers during estrangement."
'People in pain'
After viewing McDaniels' video, Reczek said her gut reaction is empathy for everyone involved. She noted the complexity of family relationships, in which generational trauma is often present.
"I find it quite sad to see people in pain," she said.
The professor added, however, that viewers can't see the dynamics that led to a viral moment.
"Seeing a snapshot on social media does not capture the full story of what is happening," she said.
"It takes an immense amount of effort for someone to initiate no-contact—it is hardly ever done on a whim. Instead, those who go no contact often make many sincere attempts to make the relationship better, or address harmful behavior.
"When things don’t change over the years, estrangement can be the outcome."
Newsweek has reached out to McDaniel for comment via TikTok. We could not verify the details of the case.
