Chapter Four: Sorcerer, which saw a big reveal for the character of Will Byers (Noah Schnapp), currently sits at the top of the chart with a 9.7 out of 10 rating, based on over 41,000 user reviews.
AdvertisementIt finishes one point ahead of season four’s standout episode, Chapter Seven: The Massacre At Hawkins Lab, which revealed the origins of Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) and Eleven’s (Millie Bobby Brown) role in it.
Rounding out the top five are season four’s Dear Billy, which featured the infamous sequence involving Kate Bush’s 1985 track ‘Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)’; season one finale The Upside Down; and season two’s finale episode The Gate, which saw Eleven close the portal to The Upside Down and Steve (Joe Keery) embrace his role as the ‘babysitter’ of the show’s young heroes.
Chapter Four: Sorcerer ended volume one of Stranger Things’ season five. Volume two will be released on Netflix on Christmas Day, while the show’s final episode will come on New Year’s Eve.
NME gave volume one four stars in its review, with Nick Levine writing: “Perhaps inevitably, volume one feels a lot like an appetiser for the rest of the season. But even in piecemeal form, Stranger Things has a flair for epic and emotionally resonant storytelling. After all those years, this smart, big-hearted sci-fi show still has the power to turn your head upside down.”
RecommendedInitial reactions were mixed from fans online, although the twist ending was praised. As with the previous season, Kate Bush saw a surge in popularity following the episodes’ release, with ‘Running Up That Hill (Deal With God)’ passing 1.5billion streams on Spotify.
