The New York Mets are in the market to add proven bats to their lineup this offseason. Perhaps the most proven bat on the market for the Mets to strike a deal with is Pete Alonso, their first baseman for the last seven seasons. With the likelihood of a return to Citi Field in question, the Mets may need to look in another direction.
They are apparently doing just that, with insider Jeff Passan recently stating that the Mets are ‘in the mix’ for free agent designated hitter Kyle Schwarber.

The 32-year-old smashed 56 home runs and drove in an MLB-leading 132 runs in 2025 with the division rival Philadelphia Phillies. His final slash line reads .240/.365/.563.
Because of his outstanding season from the plate, Schwarber’s market value sits around four years, $100 million. It’s a huge sum for a player whose value solely revolves around his bat, but he proved just how valuable his bat was for the Phillies last season. He only played eight games in the outfield in 2025, but his swing was dominant enough to result in a second-place finish in the National League MVP voting.
It’d be a pretty safe bet to bring in Schwarber, as he has consistently been one of the best hitters in baseball for years now. He hasn’t had a season with an OPS+ less than 121 since the shortened 2020 campaign. Since joining the Phillies in 2022, he’s hit at least 38 home runs in each season.
Schwarber is a threat every time he steps up to the plate, threatening pitchers with his power and ability to draw walks. He finished fifth in the MLB for walks drawn last season, aiding him to his fifth-place .928 OPS.

With their need for power and uncertainty around Alonso, it’s good news that the Mets are one of these teams vying for Schwarber’s bat.
