Patriots' Christian Elliss provides his take on viral Jaxson Dart hit

FOXBOROUGH — Many plays had people talking during the New England Patriots' dominant win over the New York Giants on Monday Night. And Christian Elliss contributed to two of those. But there was one in particular that sparked a lot of conversation as it surrounded a big hit he administered to Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart.

In the first quarter, Dart ran out of the pocket and headed down the sideline, trying to stay in bounds to get a few extra yards, but Elliss ran up and executed a huge hit on the quarterback that knocked him off his feet and had him flying out of bounds.

After the game, he detailed what he saw in that moment.

"During the play, I saw the scramble," he told reporters. "I started chasing him down. He started tiptoeing on the sideline. I thought he was just going to go out of bounds, but then I saw him tiptoeing. When I saw he was going to stay in bounds, what am I supposed to do? We play hard on defense. We try to bring life to this team. That is all I was trying to do, was just do my job and hit anything in the white jerseys.”

In response to the hit, Giants TE Theo Johnson came over and defended his quarterback, which resulted in an unnecessary roughness penalty. Some of Dart's other teammates were involved in a small altercation over the incident, and Elliss completely understood why.

“Yeah, well, I understand it," he admitted. "I understand it, 100%. If that was Drake [Maye] who took that shot, we would probably react the exact same way. But for me, I was more excited, just ready to celebrate with my teammates. So, I was ready to go celebrate with all the guys on the sideline. I saw him come flying in. I was like, oh, yeah, we are good.”
