The Philadelphia Phillies had one of the best starting rotations in baseball last season, but not all of their key starters are under contract for next season.
Ranger Suárez is a free agent and is one of the best starting pitchers on the open market. However, the Phillies may not see a need to spend big on him. Andrew Painter is seemingly ready to make his debut and the rest of the rotation is strong. Taijuan Walker is also coming off a resurgent season and could replace Suárez if Painter is not ready to go on Opening Day.
Suárez was an All-Star in 2024 and was even better last season. He should draw plenty of interest on the open market, and FanSided's Christopher Kline predicted he would not re-sign with the Phillies.
...Suárez had a 3.20 ERA in 26 starts last season. It was his best season since becoming a full-time starter. He made his debut with the Phillies in 2018 and has been a great player for them. However, the Phillies may not see a need to pay him given the current state of their rotation. Additionally, they have other needs.
The Phjillies need help in the outfield. Paying Suárez while having Painter on the brink of contributing could prevent the Phillies from making a more necessary outfield addition. Suárez shouldn't have any trouble finding a new team. In fact, the Phillies' rival, the New York Mets, could use a player like him.
