The Concord football team played an exciting brand of football from August until late November in 2025.

The run included sectional and regional titles, before coach Craig Koehler's team came up short against Merrillville in a Class 5A semistate game.

Not bad for a team that had 'home games' at Elkhart, Mishawaka, Penn and Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, as Concord's Jake Field is undergoing a complete rebuild.

And leading the way for the Minutemen was senior halfback Reese Breveard, who led the team in rushing with 1,439 yards rushing and 29 touchdowns. He also caught 53 passes to lead the team, was a threat on kickoff returns and played a lot of defense.

Thanks to his outstanding season, Breveard — a Ball State commit — has been named the Elkhart Truth's High School Football Player of the Year. He's the second straight Minutemen to win the award after Jaron Thomas in 2024.

"With the ball in his hands, Reese Breveard is the most electric player we have had in my 25 years at Concord,'' Koehler said. "A few of the guy on my staff were here when Ricky McKeinzie went through our program. He is the player that Reese has been compared to.

"He is a fantastic kid also. He has a 3.6 GPA and he's the kind of person you want representing your program.''

"Individually I feel like I had a great season both mentally and physically, and also stayed injury-free,'' Breveard said. "I feel that my teammates and I played our best when we really needed it, which helped us to have a great season.''

A team doesn't reach the 5A semistate with just one player though, and Breveard had plenty of help.

Quarterback Bo Brunner completed 150 of his 213 passes for 2,004 yards and 14 touchdowns, while also ranking second to Breveard in rushing with 815 yards and 14 more scores. He also led all of 5A in punting.

Tight end-running back-linebacker-long snapper Derek Gomez was also great this season, rushing for 580 yards, while adding 41 receptions for 635 yards. Gomez also led the team in tackles with 114 — including 13 for loss.

Then of course there was kicker Nathan Potter, who won a regional game with a 48-yard field goal as time ran out, just moments after the Minutemen recovered his perfect onside kick off the turf at Rice Field.

Offensive linemen Donovan Arnold and defensive linemen Parker Shaffer join Gomez (tight end, long snapper and linebacker), Brunner (quarterback and punter), Breveard and Potter on our All-Area team from Concord.

Elkhart posted a 6-4 mark this season, with all four losses to teams that one sectional titles — Concord, Penn, South Bend St. Joseph and Carroll (all but Penn also won regional championships).

Coach Travon Curry's team was young, with 19 new starters from the 2024 Northern Indiana Conference championship team.

The Lions had offensive line woes this season, not a surprise since Curry lost two Division 1 players to graduation after last season.

But there were things to like from the 2025 Lions, including the toughness of quarterback Micah Jarrell, who led the team in rushing with 842 yards and 14 touchdowns, while also passing for 1,644 yards and 13 more scores.

The receiving trio of Frankie Willis, Tay'shon Bardo and and Darrien Bew combined for 62 receptions. Only Bardo will graduate.

Defensively the Lions have two players making their second All-Area team in linebacker Kros Jones and defensive back Chase Bussard. Jones led the team in tackles, which included 23 tackles for loss. Bussard was second in tackles on the team.

The Penn Kingsmen had a magical season, winning the NIC with a 7-0 record and then winning a Class 6A sectional title by beating Crown Point.

Penn's season finally came to an end with a regional loss to Carroll.

But coach Pete Riordan had plenty to smile about, led by an offense featuring All-Area co-quarterback Landon Hall and talented receiver Buddy Hurley.

A move-in from Michigan, Hall threw for 2,297 yards and 26 touchdowns this season, while the 6-4 Hurley caught 50 of those passes for 1,048 yards and 11 touchdowns.

In addition to Hall and Hurley, the Kingsmen had six other players on the All-Area team, including defensive back Colden Hernanez, who had five interceptions and two defensive touchdowns and defensive end Quinn Watson, who had nine quarterback sacks.

Since reaching the state finals in 2023, NorthWood has posted two straight .500 seasons. For the second straight year, the Panthers lost to Mishawaka in a Class 4A sectional game.

The Panthers were led for the first eight weeks by dynamic sophomore quarterback Braylon Monroe, before coach Nate Andrews turned to senior Luke Keim for a win over Goshen and the tough playoff loss to Mishawaka.

Monroe rushed for 485 yards and seven touchdowns, while throwing for 1,354 and 10 more scores. His brother Deondray caught 44 passes for 617 yards, before an injury forced him to miss the final two games.

In what would turn out to be coach Chad Eppley's final season, Northridge posted a 3-7 record, losing to eventual regional champion South Bend St. Joseph, 14-7, in a 4A sectional semifinal game.

But there should be a line of candidates for the Raiders head coaching job, with plenty of talent returning, a freshman class that lost just one game and seventh and eighth grade teams that were each unbeaten.

The Raiders could have two quarterbacks returning next season in Karsyn Rumfelt and Jake Scholl. In addition, all-area receiver Tre Copeland will be back, as will linebacker Colt Granberg, a two-time all-area selection, who has led Northridge in tackles the last two seasons. All-area defensive back Hayden Gorball will also return.

The Raiders will have a new look to their schedule in 2026, as both Fort Wayne North and Elkhart come off in favor of East Noble and Columbia City.

Edwardsburg coach Dan Purlee's team battled through injuries this season to go 6-3 in the regular season, before falling to Wolverine Conference rival Vicksburg in the playoffs.

The good news is, the Eddies will have an outstanding group returning for the 2026 season, led by All-Area selections Giovanni Orue (running back), Luke Bidwell (nose guard) and Cameron Hayden (defensive back).

Orue led the Eddies rushing attack with 797 yards and 11 touchdowns, despite missing time with an injury. Hayden totaled 44 tackles, four pass break-ups and four interceptions.

Goshen won twice this season, including a 38-21 win over South Bend Washington that broke a 14-game losing streak.

While the RedHawks rushed for just 629 yards all season, quarterback Carter Diaz was solid for coach Joey Hecklinski, throwing for 1,552 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Sophomore receiver Spencer Elliott caught an area-high 89 of those passes for 876 yards and seven touchdowns. He also led Goshen in tackles from his linebacker spot.

Jimtown struggled to a 2-8 season, the program's worst since 1979 — the year before Bill Sharpe came to Baugo Twp. — although four of the losses were by a touchdown or less.

Coach Cody Vincent's team was led by senior running backs Owen Glass and Chase Coughenour, who each rushed for over 580 yards. However, the passing game struggled, averaging just 60 yards-a-game.

The Jimmies did have two defenders make our All-Area team in seniors Brodric Kaler and Trasean Baldwin.

One of Jimtown's wins came against former coach Cory Stoner's Fairfield Falcons, who lost six straight after a 3-1 start.

The Falcons were hurt by a myriad of injuries and an offense that averaged just 5.6 points a game while going 0-5 in the Northeast Corner Conference Big School Division. Fairfield also lost to Garrett, 7-0, in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.

But there is light ahead for the Falcons, who had several younger players contribute this season.

Running back Isaac Yoder will be back after rushing for 585 yards this season, while receiver Brandt Stark, just a sophomore, led the team in receptions and should be one of the area's beat in 2026. Quarterback Kahler Maust will also be back for his senior year.

Breveard, Brunner, Gomez, Arnold, Kaler, Jones, Granberg and Bussard were repeat selections this year. Kahler was selected on the offensive line last season, while Gomez was a choice at tight end and long snapper in 2024 and Breveard was a receiver on the team.

Breveard is a three-time selection to our team, while Jones and Granberg could earn that honor in 2026.
