LEXINGTON — Kentucky football reportedly is closing in on its new coach.

Will Stein, a Kentucky native, is working toward a deal to become the Wildcats' next coach, according to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports and Pete Thamel of ESPN. A former quarterback at Trinity High School before moving on to Louisville, Stein has been Oregon's offensive coordinator since 2023.

This will be the first head coaching job for the 36-year-old Stein.

During his time guiding the Ducks' offense, they've been among the most explosive units in the country.

They were No. 2 in the FBS in scoring offense and total offense in 2023, then ranked among the top 25 in each category last season. They're once again among the nation's leaders in those two statistical departments in 2025.

Stein is set to replace Mark Stoops, who spent 13 seasons leading the Wildcats. UK fired Stoops, who was the winningest coach in program history, on Monday.
